Was looking forward to deleting ST2 as it has always been a problem for me in BIAB.

However, I got this new VST to lock up BIAB on my first use.

Installed fine, much simpler than ST2.
Inserted Piano and Bass into the super midi tracks of a style.
Played fine
Then I saved and reopened the file
The VST was gone, and a series of error messages began to unfold.

Then

A huge log file was available but I just thought best to report here to see if this is reproducible.

We haven't seen an issue like this. Perhaps you could email the saved song, and the log file to support@pgmusic.com , referencing this thread. Perhaps it's a certain sequence of events, or certain songs that causes it.

OK, Done.
I was able to repeat it with little to no manipulations other then:

load
insert VSTs
play
save
open
error, error.

I need to correct one point. The VST was still inserted and playing after closing and opening. That's good...
Both error messages appear. but I just hit ignore and it seems to play well. Go figure.

There's no need to actually invoke the SFZ VST. All you do is right click on any midi instrument (using the drop downs at the top of your screen)>Select GM Midi patches>select HiQ patch>see the window and select one and that's it.

This is for using the HiQ patches only. If you wanted you can invoke the actual VST and use any other soundfonts you want but if it's the HiQ patches, no need for that. This is the same way Sampletank works too. You don't have to actually open ST to use the HiQ patches either.

The problem with loading the VST is SFZ is not multimbral, it only works with one instrument. You have to load multiple instances of it per part using the mixer, to use more than one instrument. That's probably where the errors are coming from.

Did it both ways, no diff. Same errors.

That the way it was done. Two instances of the VST, one for each instrument.

Have you tried it? Do you get the error?

Just an FYI - and to other readers this first part is just back ground info so bare with me.

I always install new BIAB over old. However, while troubleshooting an INVERSE issue with BIAB 2017 and ST2 Hi-Q's, while checking out the new sfz HI-Q's, I had to build a clean install of BIAB 2017 (to troubleshoot my ST2 HI-q "issue" - I sent all the that info to tech support in email so I don't hi-jack your thread here about sfz Hi-Q's)

In my older (2016 and previous) BIAB's I had already had Plogue/ sforzando VSTi installed in my BIAB plug-ins VSTi list (thus pre szf HI-q's because I had some one-off's commercial Selmar & Maccaferri gypsy jazz guitar sfz installed).

Now back to this topic

MusicStudent (JMD please, use something shorter for your web handle, I'm prone to lots or dylselci typing grin )

After having done a CLEAN 2017 install (see above background info), which asks if you want to install sforzando, and then also installing the actual sfz instrument files with the separately downloaded "hiq_instruments_sforzando.exe" I discovered that the HI-q's would not sound, at least they didn’t sound correct.

While I had selected a HI-Q SFZ patch for piano or bass or whatever, and while it appeared to load and gave NO ERROR, it was not actaully playing the sfz sound.

BIAB was playing whatever corresponding sound was loaded in the DEFAULT synth slot for that instrument. This was in BOTH in Win 7 (64) and Win 10 (64) (and yes always run as administrator).

I rinsed and repeated (that is I deleted the BIAB 2107, re-installed a clean install; installed sfz instruments; checked that sforzando was NOT listed in the VSTi list, and got same results)

However, as soon as sforzando (or Plogue) was added to BIAB VSTi list - then from then on selecting a sfz Hi-Q sound would play correctly using sforzando.

While sfz will probably be less problematic than ST2 HI-q's for most users, with a CLEAN BIAB 2017 install, or if the sforzando/plogue VSTi was NEVER added to VSTi previously it appears that BIAB 2017 doesn’t seem to "kick start" the sfz player and get it added to the installed VSTi list (within BIAB) INITIALLY. This MAY be contributing to your issue?

Larry

EDIT

I should also note I do not mean you have to select sforzando in the instrument slot(s) every you pick a sfz HI-Q patch, BIAB DOES THAT CORRECTLY every time, but not (at least for me) until AFTER the BIAB VSTi "pump has been primed" the first time by making sure that the Plogue sforzando VSTi has been added to the VSTi list like ever other VSTi you have to add to that list.

Yes and no error. Larry is correct, I forgot to mention that the SFZ has to be on the VSTi list, then it plays fine.

I think you know this but if not, pick any midi style, open the mixer, click plugins, pick any midi instrument and click "Add VST". On my system using the default install locations the .dll automatically showed up and all I did was click on it.

Despite error messages, the VST is playing well. I like it and am hoping I use it more. The prior ST2 used for MST's had too many issues which I hope will be avoided by this new VST.

So now, just to keep thing tidy, how do I get rid of all the OLD ST2 sounds which fill the MST menu?

That I can't answer because I have the same list. I hear you about problems with the ST HiQ patches. With my old Win 7 machine despite lots of help from PG central I never got all of them to work properly. However last summer I picked up the new system you see in my sig and they all worked perfect the first time I used them and everything works fine now. I have had absolutely zero issues with anything I've used with Win10 including Biab/RB.

I can't say for sure but it appears that when it comes to PC's newer is better.

Well that list and apparent INABILITY to use both SZF (which now works) and ST2 (which should STILL work - and DOES in RB - with me copying the SFZ files to same location as old ST2 instrument "\Band in a box" location folders and that is issue I sent off to Tech support (yes with sfz it should be a "who cares" but it's the the principle)

MusicStudent

to get rid of those annoying extra (no longer wanted ST2) HI-Q entries go into the the "X:\...BB\DX settings" folder (in may case "D:\Music\BB\DX Settings") and delete the three (3) files for reach instrument (drums, piano, bass, etc.) that have "Hi-Q...SampleTank.." in the file name - there will be:

two "Hi_Q...SampleTank.txt" files, and
one "Hi-Q...SampleTank.tgs" file

example delete

"Hi-Q 001 01 Drums, Acoustic, Rock Kit SampleTank info.txt"
"Hi-Q 001 01 Drums, Acoustic, Rock Kit SampleTank.tgs"
"Hi-Q 001 01 Drums, Acoustic, Rock Kit SampleTank.txt"

.....

do NOT delete any file with "..Sforzando.." in file name

Actually, you only need to delete the "Hi-Q...SampleTank.tgs" files to get rid of them from being listed by BIAB in the Hi-Q list but...why leave that mess

Larry

EDIT

Final thought, if nervous about deleting any files, simply MOVE to a holding folder or rename said "Hi-Q...SampleTank.tgs" and/or .txt files

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
