Hello

First off I'm brand new to BiaB and so far the program seems to be very powerful. But... I have some issues.

I'm trying to sort the files in the style picker but for the life of me I can't figure this thing out. I'm not sure if this is a case of as we used to say when I used to write code, software "created by engineers for engineers" Or if it's staring me in the face and I just have a block, but it has been a source of much frustration and seriously dampening my initial enthusiasm for BiaB.

No matter what column I click on it will not arrange it alphabetically.

If I input a search word in the search window it comes back with a list that has very little if anything to do with what I'm looking for. For instance a friend shows me her version of a song and she used a style, long name: "Cocktail Swing" genre jazz. I tried every way I could think of to search for the file to no avail. I got back to her and she gave me the short name for the file and I eventually found it. And you'll never guess what the long name for the file was... "Cocktail Swing" genre jazz. What gives?

And when are the help files going to be updated? Nearly half of everything I have looked up so far has been out of date or requires you to have you window settings in a certain format or the directions are worthless. And it changes from subject to subject. a lot of the time I give up on the help file and hit the net, but a lot of that is out of date or again requires you to reconfigure your interface to make it work.

I"m planning to buy some of "Notes" styles and i don't want them to disappear into the void and never be seen again.

End rant.

Thanks

David

Sorry you are having trouble.

If you are still on build 510 as in your signature, please update to 513. Don't do this in the program; go to the grey Support Tab above, then Windows Software Updates. There were known issues with the styles indexing.

About Notes Norton styles, they are top notch work by a performing jazz musician who has used BIAB since the 1990s (like me). What I don't know yet is how they react to the new cleanup routine in BIAB 2018. A new feature this year was the reorganization of files and folders, called cleanup. What you can do if you aren't sure is to run this manually. It's in the /BB/Data folder, and the name is something like BBW-cleanup. It puts all files where they need to be, including older bonus paks and anything made before BIAB version 2018. It also does no harm to re-run it, even if not needed.

If you think you are missing files, there are a few other things we can talk about.

Are you referring to program files, style files or .sgu files? How will I know if I'm missing these files?

Thanks
David

Firstly, do update to the latest release. As mentioned there were changes to the StylePicker since build 510.

Secondly, you may not be able to find some styles in the StylePicker because the specific package (version of BiaB) that you have doesn't include the required style(s) (Pro, mega, Ultra, etc). I think this is what Matt might have been referring to in his reply. He'll clarify in due course.

Which Package do you have, and what Extra Styles paks (if any) do you have?

Yes, there is that. I was thinking of styles and RealTracks, and their location.

There is a menu option, What Add-ons Do I Have. Run that.

Yes, 'What Add-ons Do I Have' is available from the Help drop-down menu and also the Options drop-down menu.

The result from either is the same.

The easiest way to find a style is by typing in the name of a song or artist in the style list search box. If there is a match, Biab will list which styles that will work with the song (in style list) you typed in the search box.

If there are multiple styles, an * in front of the style name means those styles are also a similar style match.

If you are wanting to make your own style, select blank 4/4 and then you can add each RealTrack for the Bass, Drums, Piano etc in Biab.

This is my Styles files loaded (Thanks Matt for the tip):
Styles Disks : 0 (Built-in) ,1 ,2 ,3 ,7 (Country) ,16 (Blues) ,21 ,42 ,44 ,46 ,48 ,50 ,61 ,62 ,63 ,70

Both of the styles that I was looking for were suggested to my by someone using BiaB 2004 version unmodded. I eventually found them by getting the actual file names and searching on that.

As for the search on artists and specific song titles, super idea, and as it matures and I get better at using it, it will probably be more helpful. But so far my experience using it has not been productive. Example: I was searching for a style for Frank Sinatra doing Our love is here to stay. The search function yielded 7 jazz styles. None really matched the song then it gave me a bunch of country styles. It did do a better job on Ray Charles.

But back to my original issue that was not fixed by build 513. In other programs with spread sheet/Table presentations like this, if you click on the header for a column they will sort everything on that column alphabetically either in ascending or descending order. In the style picker if you click on the header for a column it reorders the screen but it is not alphabetical or any sort of order that I can make out. None of the columns will sort alphabetically. Is this a glitch, an omission or a feature?

Thanks

David

Hi David,

If you click on the "Type" button under the Filter String box, you'll likely find that you have "All (Real first, MIDI sorted to the bottom)" so you'd see RealStyles sorted alphabetically, then MIDI styles sorted alphabetically. Could that be what you're seeing?

If so, try choosing All, then it should all be sorted alphabetically, ignoring style type.

Does this help, or does the sorting still not make sense?

Thanks
Kent

Yes.

Setting it to All. solved the problem.

And when I set all of the filter drop downs to "all" or their least restrictive selection The list grew larger still. So I guess I set in some choices in those and forgot about it, maybe assumed that if I wasn't actively using that section (something in the filter string window) that it wouldn't be active. Well I guess I was wrr ah wrr ... I was mistaken.

So I have 926 styles in my list. Is that a normal number for the base 2018 ver?

Thanks Kent

David

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
