Hi,

I have a simple question that I would like to think has a simple answer.
I created a new Song in BIAB 2020 for Windows.
I set the Key to Dm
I go to the first measure and I type "i" as I just want to start writing my chord progression with a "Dm" chord. But instead I get as a result a "F" chord.
I know F is the relative major of Dm - and F would be the correct answer for "i" in F major - but I want to write in Dm and using Roman Numeral Notation is wonderful when you are experimenting with keys.

How can I actually use Roman Numeral Notation with minor keys?

I found a thread I was replying to in 2019 that has the answer to an extent. I will paste an edited even easier to follow version here.

In short: you CAN make BIAB display the Roman Numeral Notation with relation to minor keys. Just do this:

Go to "Option" menu
Select "Preferences"
Click on the "Display" button.
UNCHECK "[ ] For Roman Numerals of Chords in minor keys, use relative major"

However, one issue remains: we must still enter the correct chord root and quality, i.e., sharp, flat, minor, major, diminished. BIAB does not "calculate" the chords for the selected key. If you just type "i" you get "D" in D minor.

You need to type "im" to get the actual "Dm". It would be nice if BIAB was able to calculate the chords for a given selected key - or at least have an option to do that. This leads me to a more advanced question:

Does BIAB2020 have an option that can "calculate" the chords based on the roman numeral notation of a given key, automatically?

Not that I'm aware of. I can't recall any changes to roman numeral notation. Others may know more, but I looked and didn't find anything in the release notes for the 2020 or 2021 version.

Hi Intini, Welcome to the forum and to Band-in-a-Box!

I have a curiosity question that has no bearing on your initial question; do you use Band-in-a-Box for Windows or Band-in-a-Box for Mac?

Hi Intini,

Here's a post I wrote a couple of months ago that explains how BIAB uses Roman numerals in minor keys.

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=646455#Post646455

It might give a little more insight.

Regards,
Noel

Thanks a lot. Perhaps they will add this feature in the future. It certainly rhymes!

Thank you, Jim!
I use the Windows version of BIAB 2020.
I had a license for Mac before. But in 2018 Macs were too low on the cost/benefit ratio and I went PC all the way (i9-9900K, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, 64GB Ram, RTX-2080Ti, 8TB SSDs, 3 x 4K displays, etc.). Windows 10 is very stable and PCs are super flexible and highly expandable platforms.

Thank you, Noel! Very nice post!
I was actually being able to enter the correct chords. But I was wondering if perhaps BIAB 2020 would have an option in some of the many configuration windows that would enable an "automatic" chord calculator for a given minor key when using roman numerals.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
