Has anyone experienced this problem? If I press different buttons for certain tasks too quickly, BIAB quits responding. Thanks, Ray

I haven't, but what's your version and build, Ray? What OS? Can you give us a set of steps to try and duplicate this?

Win7-64 bit, BIAB 2010, latest update. I find that if I don't wait a few seconds before clicking another button, BIAB will stop responding. I wonder if it could caused by making changes in tunes that I had done years ago. Shouldn't the tunes done in WinXP and before XP work just as well in Win7? Later, Ray

P.S. I've already done the "return to factory settings:.

Hi Ray,

I don't know if you have done this recently but a diskclean and defrag will help - I would like to see a much larger/clearer "generating/loading" notice

I have this problem with older or freeware VSTi's.

Give us details of exactly what you're using for synths, how you have your DXi and audio drivers set up and is this happening with songs with only Real Tracks in them, only midi or both?
The only time I've had Biab lock up is when I'm using the "fast generation" process and I happen to stop the song before letting it play some number of bars. The exact number depends on how long the song is and how many RT's are being used. The way fast generation works is it allows you to start play before the program has finished generating the whole song so if you stop it too soon, it just waits until the generation is done. You would never notice that if you've never stopped a song after a couple of bars.

I too had regular occurences of BIAB and RealBand crashing under 64bit Windows 7 ("Home Premium" edition IIRC). By regular I mean approximately every 10-20 minutes. By "crashing" I mean the program locked up, a loud constant buzz came through the audio device, but there were no error messages. A reboot was necessary each time to reset to audio device. Task Manager showed a BIAB process that couldn't be killed.

I'm running BIAB/RB 2009.5. I have not applied any updates or patches. No VSTi or DXi synths - I use just BIAB/RB to generate audio that gets more treatment in other apps.

I have reverted to WinXP (32bit) and will probably wait for a Win7 service pack before I try again. .....and a 64-bit version of BIAB and RB ?????

I have since changed my audio card from a Line6 TonePort USB to an Audiophile 2496 so that might help. I doubt it was a driver problem though because the other audio programs I use - Reason & Record mostly - never crashed with either device. (Reason has never crashed on me in nearly 10 years of use).

For now BIAB behaves OK in WinXP 32. I'd like to try a 32-bit version of Win7 and see if the problem is a 32bit vs. 64bit issue, or a WinXP vs. Win7 issue.

Well, that is the FIRST thing you should do. Find and apply the LATEST patch posted for each program. That will update all that came before that patch as well. There have been fixes.

Download and install them, then check operation, it may very well solve your problem.

What does this mean? You guys have got to be very specific. If you're not using any VSTi's or DXi's then what are you using for sound? Are you talking about Real Tracks, your own recording or what? And when you say "I use just BIAB/RB to generate audio", what audio are you talking about?? These programs are not perfect but they don't just crash all the time even under Win 7, 64 bit. The only real issue with 64 bit is the Roland VSC DXi won't run but most other DXi/VSTi's will with no problem and all the RT/RD's are fine too. Your problem will be somewhere in either your pc's settings or within Biab/RB's midi/audio driver settings or both and maybe installing the latest patch is all you need. Without those details, there's nothing we can do to try to help you.

I've been trying to replicate the problem for last two days and can't! Hopefully it won't happen anymore. Later, Ray

Hi Ray

Pleased to hear that you are at least free from the problem at the moment

In our workshops we find that the majority of problems stem from incompatible drivers or ones that have become corrupted - some third party so called computer cleaners or optimizers are mostly to blame

Before a return to factory settings I always re-download the latest update first which usually works

As posted above if the computer is not junk cleaned and defragged then you can be too quick to press buttons - pressing Play twice will do this

It seems I didn't make it clear I'm not looking for Win7 help right now. Sorry about that. I just posted in response to the OP question since it might have been related to my own Win7/BIAB experience.

Like I said, right now I have a stable system on WinXP and my priorities are elsewhere for the moment. But I will apply the patches, thanks Mac & jazzmammal

When I do go back to Win7, I will be far more specific should I need help.

@jazzmammal to answer your question I use BIAB and Real Band to generate audio-only files, i.e. NO MIDI, just Real Tracks. Then I import those tracks into Reason+Record projects.

Thanks

Hi Laraka

Although I now use Win7 my post was non specific and meant for any styles - in our work shops we have all the different OS's and find incompatible/faulty drivers is a big factor

I moved from XP to Vista and now Win7 seemlessly but wished that I had missed the Vista experience - stable but over bloated

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
