I'm a little confused here (but doesn't take much nowadays to confuse me).

I understand that BIAB comes with a demo of Coyote Forte DXi, right? And it comes with CoyoteWT as a freebie? If that's true so far, then could someone please help me understand the MIDI/Audio drivers setup?

I'd like to set it so that it uses Forte (so I can demo and decide whether I want to buy it or not) but I see two distinct places to choose a synth. At the top it says "Synth/Sound Card" and there I can indeed choose Coyote Forte DXi. But down below, below the Get Patch/Drum Kit info, there is a checkmark to use a VST/DXi synth, another checkbox to route MIDI thru to MIDI driver, and then below that a box marked VST/DXi Synth settings. In that last box, the only option I have is to choose the CoyoteWT.

So -- if I want to hear the Forte Synth as much as possible (exclusively?) how do I set things up? Any enlightenment would be vastly appreciated (right now I have the Forte in the top box, both lower ones checkmarked, and the WT in the lower box, which just doesn't seem right).

The Coyote Forte DXi and the CoyoteWT are 2 different animals. The WT is just the Windows player in a Coyote skin

You need to first install the Coyote Forte DXi. I"m not sure where the demo is. The "Synth/Sound Card" thing is just a list that sets up patches. It's not that important as the Forte is a GM synth.

Once you install it when you check"Use VSTi/DXi synth a dialog will open. Use the drop down to load the Forte.

That is likely the little RH selection up top and it is where you choose the Patch Map. If you are intending to use the Coyote WT DXi, then you should choose the selection there. All it does is make sure that the instrument names you see in the BB Patch dropdown correspond to the instruments for your chosen synth. There is a long list of possible patch maps provided by default; nobody would have all of the actual software and hardware synths from that list available for actual use on any one machine, though.

And that is where you actually invoke the synth itself.

So you ideally would want to do both.

Ah -- okay. So I guess the question to ask everyone here is exactly *where* that demo is.

I thought it came with BIAB -- I bought the Ultrapak (on the hard drive) but I don't see it anywhere there. Perhaps I need to contact technical support.

And if you see it there, it must have already installed when you installed the host program (BB).

Select it there, then it should open, hit the X at the top right to get rid of its control panel screen, then hit Okay in the MIDI selection window. It should now play when you load a BB MIDI-based song.

Well, I see the CoyoteWT there, but not the Forte -- isn't the demo for the Forte supposed to come with BIAB?

I thought the WT was free (and sounds terrible compared to the Forte)? Am I missing something?

Ah -- nevermind (again. Sigh). I searched the site and found the Forte demo and am downloading it now.

Eventually I'll figure this all out.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
