a couple of all midi songs sound better with hi q patches than the default GM sounds of my edirol hypercanvas.

but the choice i've got is limited. where can i find new ones (preferably free but modest cost is ok if i can audition them) and how do i use them.

do i load the sforzando plug in and then navigate to the downloaded file? or do i need another vst?

the high q sounds i've got with BIAB and RB are tgs fies. what form do the downloaded instruments come i and do they load the same way?

i'm particularly interested in acoustic guitar patches

Bob,

I'm not sure where the name, "HI-Q", came from but I believe it is a title PG Music invented to identify PG Music midi sound patches. The title is given to midi patches that PG Music has developed in house.

Over time, PG Music has included several free to own midi sound modules to playback HI-Q midi patches including 1K MultiMedia's SampleTank Free, 1K Multimedia's SampleTank 2.5, Plogue's Sforzando and SynthFont64. The 1K Multimedia midi sound modules use tgs files to define a midi patch. Both Sforzando and Synthfont can playback multiple definition files, however, Sforzando natively uses sfz 2.0 definition files while Synthfont natively uses sf2.

So there are two answers to your question of where can you obtain additional HI-Q midi patches:

1) Request PG Music create additional HI-Q midi patches in the +++ Styles and RealTracks Wishlist +++ forum section.

2) Create your own. Both Sforzando and Synthfont give a user the ability to create midi patches from audio files. The patches can be as simple or complex as you desire. More information is available at +++ Sforzando +++ and +++ Synthfont.com +++

Last, both the Sforzando and Synthfont websites have links to free midi patches created by users or third parties. You can also search the internet for SFZ or SF2 files but use a virus scan and be cautious of any files you download.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

FWIW .tgs files are pretty much PGMusic exclusive.
They are 'Trans-Group Settings' if I recall correctly and instruct PGMusic products how to load certain FX/Synth settings, so I doubt you'll find those on the web. They also work for loading a set of FX with presets when (sometimes) other methods seem problematic.

As a tip; if you do get new 'Hi-Q' sounds elsewhere and want to use them in PGMusic products, I suggest once you get them loaded and working, Save them as Group Settings in the DXi/VSTi window .. it seems to help PGMusic products recall the settings as they do then get saved as .tgs files again, so you can then use Load Group to recall them.
Just a thought

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
