Hi,

I know and appreciate copyright on artists music.
I was wondering if there are any sites to upload a cover song just for personal listening, SoundCloud do not accept copyright material.

Regards
Brian

I think youtube doesn't have a problem with covers.

soundcloud officially says you shouldn't upload covers, but I've seen lots of people post covers over there.

You are right Blue Attitude. YouTube is "tolerant" of covers because they have a system known as "Content Id" that reimburses the copyright owner for advertising placed on your videos.

You could get a domain, make your own website and do what you want.

YouTube has its own license language and lawyers to interpret the laws in their favor and crush anyone who argues, but I still think it does a terrible disservice to musicians.

youtube's tolerance of covers is apparently dictated by the original artist's wishes. Whereas some artists are OK with receiving ad revenue when their songs are streamed as covers, other artists who want to retain control of their material may opt to have covers of their songs removed.

I had a cover of an Eagles song and another of an Allman Bros song on youtube, and both got flagged as copyright violations. Youtube removed the Eagles cover, but not the Allman Bros cover. (I took them both down)

I'd probably take my chances and post to Youtube first, and if they object, THEN take it down. Chances are pretty good nobody will object.

Another way to put stuff online is with personal storage space, such as DropBox. The files aren't publicly searchable and unless you post a link nobody will find them.

Dropbox is a good and free idea for this, Pat.

I wish YouTube had ‘opt in’ instead of allowing anything unless you (creator) notice and object. And if you do object, the full force of their lawyers comes to the aid of the copyright violator.

It will be automatically scanned and analyzed. You'll find out soon enough if they have any concerns. You will also have the right of reply though.

As far as posting stuff on YT I wouldn't worry about it. Either then get a complaint or they don't. Here's an example:

Only the Lonely

This was from last year. I'm on keys and my sister Toni is the vocalist. A friend of the band did the video and the sound is just the camera's mic. She (the friend) was contacted by YT and it looked like it was going to be taken down but then something happened and it wasn't and I now see it's still there.

Not the best sound and zero rehearsal with some coming to the island by boat, arranging for a hotel or staying with friends and other stuff.

I've made a few posts in the RB forum about recording vocalists and I mentioned it was my sister and this tune was one of them I redid as a "studio version". It came out really nice, all with RB.

I think YT is probably a good choice since they have some kind of licensing arrangement with most of the publishers.

It's important that if you do post it, the songwriters get their royalties. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it should keep you from having legal action taken against you.

I have a couple of things on YT. One is a cover and another is a promo video for my duo, The Sophisticats ®, with excerpts of many covers.

Are you sure about that, because I know Youtube will take down videos even if the original song is in the background such as a wedding?

One trick that makes it harder for youtube's analysis algorithm to identify your song as a cover: Use Audacity to raise or lower the key by an amount that is less than a semitone. The algorithm won't be able to transpose it to a standard key and get a match.

Also compressing or expanding the length of the song will make it harder to match the tempo of the two songs

The closer your version is to the original, the more likely that the algorithm will make the connection. So, a third possibility is to forget the song's signature passages and make your own version of it

Identifying your upload as a cover of song _______ by band _______ is a sure fire way to flag yourself. But again, not all artists will ask that you take down covers of their songs. They probably make more money from ads on their covers than they get from Pandora.

Posting a cover online for your personal use? And on Youtube?

For personal use, keep it off the internet.

Would there really be a problem if you made it private on SoundCloud?

Hi,

Tried uploading as private onto SoundCloud, it still removes track for copyright reasons.

Right! If it is for personal use just listen to it on the computer and/or burn it onto a CD. If you have friends/family that want to hear it put it in Dropbox and give them the location.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
