We have a recently admitted elderly patient who speaks absolutely no English, exclusively Spanish, so my nurse, Amy, devised a scheme whereby I would translate 15 medical phrases into Spanish to provide for his daily care. I enlisted the help of Carlos Eduardo Arellano from the Spanish BIAB forum who, in turn, recruited his wife, Ana, to provide the feminine touch and record the phrases in her sweet Spanish voice. Carlos then emailed them in mp3 format and I loaded them into my Dynavox Maestro speech synthesis device. We then gave copies of the numbered list to staff members who are directly involved with his care. You can't imagine the joy expressed on his face when he heard the staff communicating in his own native language. The fear, anger and apprehension simply melted from his face and he is now accepting his medications. I want to publicly thank Carlos and Ana for putting a smile back on a stranger's face.

Dynavox is doing my personal story on my unique applications with the Maestro. It must equal "War And Peace" because the factory representative has been working on it for over two years, (Chuckle). It's another classic case of a worthwhile project depending totally upon that infamous "weakest link."

Hola Don, Ana and I are happy to know that we help Bob feel better and receive his medical care with even more joy. Bob must be also very happy for your friendship and and your laudable attitude with him. Now I understand why everybody loves you so much amigo! . Btw, we are pending of recording a spanish salute to Bob, maybe that can help him a bit to bring more smiles to his face Saludos amigo! Carlos.

Carlos, amigo and Ana, amiga,
I spoke to Amy, Bob's nurse, and she said, with a sad face: "Carlos and Ana had better hurry!" I hate to bear bad news but my friend, Bob, is fading away rapidly. She don't think that he will live through the weekend. I am so sorry, my friends.
That's a problem with living in a nursing home, you dare not become emotionally close to anyone. I no longer ask who may have died over the past weekend, it's too painful. Amy is all to familiar with the final signs of death. She has seen too much of it as a wonderful, caring nurse. She has asked me if she could be my "adopted daughter" and I proudly, tearfully accepted.
If anyone would like to thank Amy personally, I would be very happy to ensure that she gets your messages. Nurses are the most overlooked and under-appreciated people in medicine.
Go hug a nurse!

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
