I've been through 3 of them, each teaching me something new and or pushing me to learn more deeply something I thought I already knew.

Great classes each in their own right.

Hi Jim I have done the songwriting and the music production. Got half way through the jazz improvisation before deciding it was way beyond my musical abilities at this stage of my development. Thoroughly enjoyed all 2 and a half of them.

Herb,

You can download all of the videos and keep them. I have mine backed up on a DVD. I'll be going back to them until they are part of my way of working.

I took Professor Pat Pattison's Songwriting Course last go-round and thought he's a fabulous teacher and a magnetic personality.

Lesson #1 taught me a lot of the basics that had alluded me before.

I recommend it to songwriters and lyricists all levels.

And it's free and worth thousands and perhaps tens of thousands of pennies more than that.

My experience in that class put my opinion of free MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) perpendicular to my opinion about them beforehand. I still can't believe that it's free. Piles of great advice and tips in a very natural progression from the beginning to end of the course.

I've taken 3 music related classes on Coursera so far. I haven't passed any but have gained a great amount of knowledge anyhow.

A big draw for me is downloading all the videos (the videos are in MP4 file format), video transcriptions (text files), study materials (pdf files), quizzes, some forum discussions and reference links. Much of this works on my tablet or e-reader so I can review away from the computer.

I passed the songwriting class with something like 96%. There is value to be had in doing the exercises and watching the videos (which you can download and save for offline viewing) but the grading was ridiculous as it was all peer assessed and no effort made to match up people with each other based on their skill levels. Lots of people were unhappy with the fact that people who did not even understand the assignment (or even the language) would mark their grade down! The price is certainly right and I guess the grade really doesn't matter anyway!

I have signed up for another MOOC class that starts soon so maybe I'll like this one better!

The grading - Not really worth bothering almost. The content - definitely worth pursuing. The discussion groups - worth participating. The assignments - worth attempting with all effort required. But yes, the grading is nearly useless.

Take the classes to learn, not to attain some grade. This is true for any class. If you are in it to learn, that's the right reason. If you are in it to earn a certificate - time for some soul searching.

I think the same applies to your cardiologist as well. I want the guy that really wanted to learn the details of being a cardiologist - because it's interesting to him, not because he gets to put the diploma on the wall and print money.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
