Hello Friends,
I have written a new song called "Outside Of God's Grace Looking In." It is a southern country gospel. Of course all backing tracks are Band In A Box R/T and and I am doing the vocals and guitar turnarounds.
As always comments are welcomed!
Marty

Hi Marty,

Yet another first-class work. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this latest one. At first I thought I was headed for an AABA format but then you tricked me and carried the refrain line over into the chorus. What a neat idea! I've just pocketed that away in my songwriter's toolkit.

All the best,
Noel

Hello Noel,
Thanks for the listen and your kind words. When a person of your abundant talent gives a thumbs up it means a lot to me. As I was writing the song GOD just gave me the words to write. It all fell into place in about an hour. It took longer to mix and master than to write the words! LOL!

Everything important sounds great! Solid production, good story development, catchy tune, smooth key change, interesting change of instruments - very well done!

Under the "nitpick" category: On the chorus, have you considered shortening "I was on the outside" to "On the outside"? To my highly delicate ears it sounds a bit like you're shoehorning the words in to fit. It doesn't have the same effect in the verse. I realize that "I was" makes the line more personal, but since you've already said "I was" several times in the verse, I don't think it'll do that much damage.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Dave,
You know I fought with that very idea on the "I was" and decided not to do it. But as I listened to the song I now wished I had done that. I guess I was too close to the song during mixing! LOL! I think the flow would have been better. Very good point. And thanks for the thumbs up on the production end.

Very Nice arrangement and message in the song. I could almost hear a little Willy Nelson going on there for awhile. I am just glad that while we may be outside looking in the door is always open to come inside with God's grace.

Nice job Marty. Very nice job on the guitar hooks. It was your last song we got to talking about musical hooks right? You took that and ran with it. Very well executed on this one. It's always a winner to incorporate something of the lyrical melody into the musical hook, and this is a fine example of how effective that can be. It's that detail that elevates a song above just a biab track. It's really impossible to do it with RT's with that kind of detail, so if you play an instrument and you can do it, it's worth doing. I have been able to get a musical hook done with only RT's, but it takes some heavy editing and you really have to hand over control of the notes to what you have and then find something that works. Not easy. I've been letting RT's lead the way and it's worked out. But every track demands something different.

As to the lyric line 'I was on the outside', I think overall you made the better choice staying with that. In general, it's a tense thing and mostly you're refering to the past, so it works- I WAS on the outside. There may be a couple of spots where you can get away with just 'on the outside', and that kind of thing is worth serious consideration too. Saying it both ways breaks up any repetition that may arise, as well as being crafty too. But overall, it works and is not a deal breaker. Great job on this one. You're really hitting on all 8 lately. Keep riding that wave Marty. Bang every one out you can. That muse is like a wave that ebbs and flows, in my experience. So ride it hard and then if there's a cool down period, enjoy that break too! But so far, you're proving to be an endless well. Good for you!

Bob, Terry and Dan,
Thanks for the feedback and taking time to write. I have learned tons from people on this forum. I get ideas from others songs and utilize them in my efforts. What a great way to learn this art. I also thank the BIAB gurus for such a wonderful product.
Merry Christmas,
Marty

Marty,This just came to me after listening to this gospel song again.Towards the end of the song maybe you could switch it around and have the verse and hook pointing to someone who is still on the outside looking in.. it really feels to me anyway (though the song is strong as it is)that it would be a sort of gospel outreach to those who are still on the outside. In other words God found you and God is there for them if they only looked for Him.Just a thought.Cheers Frankie

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
