This is a song about how very different and depressing things can sometimes seem when you revisit the town you grew up in:
"Streets Of Shame".
Lyrics and notes on the song can be found on my web site here.
Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Crystal clear mix, good song. I wouldn't change a single thing here.

Cheers,

Only one very respectful question. What was done in either BiaB, or RB, so that this is showcased for USERS? I see it was made with jammer Pro, and Sonar in particular, with help from EZDrummer, and Battery, I see no PG products were harmed in the making.

Still a stellar song with very polished production, and by the way very excellent vocal.

No offense intended, just a question.

In the FAQs at the top of this forum, Peter does not stipulate that the posted works have to be presented as BIAB/RB works, contain Realtracks, etc. I note from the forum over time that many use BIAB/RB simply as a stepping stone to an end product and not the end result itself. If one of the reasons that you've been holding back from posting more songs is because they were not done in BIAB/RB, don't worry about it. Go ahead and post

All the best,
Noel

Yeah, Noel, i understand that, many use BIAB or Rb, as tools to build track beds, and then move those elsewhere to finish them, add to them, and such. I do this as well on many tracks, using Sonar, or other products. Some i do completely in RB, just depends. I just thought that some part of it show be made in a PG product, or it is not really showcaseing the use of PG products.

Having said that, i love John's work, it is incredible. I have listened to almost all of his songs, and am a big fan. I hope i can someday put out polished product like he does.

Really I am sure Peter does not care that much, John is a user of PG products on many of his other songs.

Many thanks for the kind comments occ, pikeyh, Superbron, Kent, Rob and Noel. I really appreciate your taking a listen.

Rob, There's usually some BIAB in some parts of all my songs as you say, and in fact BIAB did play its usual part in the early stages of this one when I set the whole song out first using REGGAE_2.STY. I then also gave Jammer a try at it and in this particular instance the BIAB parts ended on the cutting room floor I'm afraid! I tend to heavily customise whatever MIDI parts I get from BIAB or Jammer anyway, so I can manipulate things towards what I'm hearing in my head as suitable for the particular piece. For that reason I confess I'm not a big user of RealTracks as I can't do that easily with audio, although a couple of songs back ('Too Many Questions') I did do that by carefully editing and pasting together slices of RealTracks.

I would love to hear more about your process, i like your end results. The songs are so well produced. I did think on a couple there was just a touch to much reverb, but then i tend to do that also. Anyway i am amazed at how you get that clean clear sound so consistently.

the drums were quite realistic... I take it from previous posts the drums are MIDI? what hardware or software do you use for your drums?

EXCELLENT composition! Every aspect of it was instantly enjoyable. I very rarely hear a song that appeals to my senses as much as this one did.

This is very very good. You have a very enviable clear sound in your productions, and this one is certainly no exception! Maybe some of the 'trick' is to use midi tracks?! Great vocal too

Hey John,

Great song. Fabulous production and vocals. I didn't really care for the siren sound effect to open and close but that's subjective and just me.

What I especially love about your writing and production is your excellent mastery of pop song form and flow.

I would also like to know what hardware/software you are using to get the great midi sounds????

Many thanks Pat, Jan, Bob and Josie for taking a listen and for the compliments. It makes all those hours very worthwhile!

Josie, the five MIDI sounds for bass guitar, Hammond organ, 'Moog'-y part, Fender Rhodes piano and the guitar panned left were all patches on my Roland Fantom X6 synth workstation. The synth strings which I used as a pad in the choruses was from a soft synth Halion Sonic.

Thanks for the compliment about pop song form and flow! I work hard on that in each song. One of my simple but effective tricks is to always have something slightly different for the listener to latch onto every few seconds or so, and certainly in the different sections. For example, the Moog sounds are only heard in verses 2 and 3, and the strings only in the choruses. The cabasa, maraccas and guiro only come in at certain points also. Most of these things aren't consciously noticed by the listener - they just know they're interested!

This is really cool, I can hear some "Smiths" in there, don't know if it was intentional or not

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
