Nice use of BIAB. Great recording. One question: why do the mountains turn pink?

Haha...good question. Brad wrote the song about the snowbirds that live in Arizona during the winter. (Brad performs at the Arizona Opry in Apache Junction) The title comes from a popular bumper sticker seen on a lot of snowbird vehicles. It refers to the change in color of the mountains in the Southwest near sunset...apparently they turn pink...and the snowbirds know it's time to start the party. Tequila Margarita for me, please!

Pro quality all the way!

That “The western’s gone in country music” line is so true!

Two thumbs up.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Just tried the link and it's working. And since others can play it might just be a browser thing; try copying and pasting the URL directly into your browser or "Open URL" menu item in MediaPlayer or whatever player you're using.

Awesome, possum! Excellent work throughout.

Yes, the mountains actually do turn pink at sundown. Quite gorgeous, in fact. I believe it's a result of dust particles in the atmosphere in relationship to the sun's angle.

Very nice with a great mix and harmony vocals. BTW, are you rendering the tracks as mono or stereo?

Hey Moot...

BIAB tracks are centered and transferred to the DAW (Reaper, Sonar Producer) as stereo tracks. Vocals are recorded mono, as well as Brad's acoustic guitar, and Chris' steel. Here is our general panning setup:

Bass-Left 8-10,
Drums Right 8-10,
Acoustic fingerpicking guitar Right 50,
Other rhythm (if any) Left 50,
Steel guitar Right 75,
Fiddle Left 75,
Lead vocal- 0 (zero pan),
Harmony vocals Left 90, and Right 90.

Adjust to taste. Master mix is rendered from the DAW in stereo at 192kps for MP3, and 44khz 16bit for WAV.

Obviously there are a million ways to mix a song. I like to set my panorama as though I were viewing/hearing the band onstage. Wide panning of backup vocals creates a nice fat vocal sound. Lead instruments (steel, fiddle) are kept well away from the lead vocal which always has it's own sonic space. No reverb for the bass, but some compression to keep the bass tight and focused. After topping and tailing, the final mix is slightly compressed and about 3db of highs added back in at 7khz and above.

Thanks for listening,
Bob

Same here. I guess it's becoming a bit old school but I like to imagine myself at about the the 10th row and dead center relative to the band. I've been saving my realtracks as mono rather than stereo (some aren't stereo) with the notion that they would pan better as a mono track...dunno - may have to try panning some stereo tracks.

Yea...10th row, center. That's about what I have in mind when I'm mixing. Comes out nice and fat. If I'm doing a song without harmonies, I put the leads like fiddle and steel farther out on the edges.

As for mono vs stereo, I've tried it both ways and I can't tell the difference. I suppose it would be easy enough to convert the BIAB tracks to mono. I always bring 'em over as stereo just in case I might miss something. But really, I swear I can't tell the difference. I understand about your point of panning a mono track. Makes sense. But I just can't tell. We have some nice mains in the mixing/mastering studio, but I always make my final decisions with a pair of Sony MDR 7506 headphones ($99 ) . I can really hear the panorama that way and I've gotten used to hearing things thru these particular phones, so I know how the master will come out. I've literally mastered hundreds of songs for clients with these cheapies. The proof is in the master.

Thanks for listening,
Bob

@Greg...hey, dude. Howz things way out there in the west? Probably not as smoky as here. I've smelled smoke so much now I think I'm smelling it even when there's none. Things have calmed down a lot. About time.
Thanks for the post and your nice comments. Keep in touch.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
