Another of Eddie's songs which he's given to his UK team to see what we can do with it.

Eddie's original track was a bit heavier than this version with more instruments and although it suited his voice, we wanted to try it with a female vocal and a lighter backing. We gave the track to Ellie Cheney who had done lots of BVs for Eddie but not a lead voice yet.

The backing was kept simple with just guitars and a single string line. We added a five string bass, because the track is in "D" and we wanted to use the lower octave to give it some depth. The drums are samples, programmed up in MIDI.

We love Eddie's lyrics and this one is a real heart-breaker. Very few effects and very little compression on this track, because we wanted it to sound as natural as possible. See what you think. And, of course, it's all done in Powertracks as usual.

Credits -
Ellie Cheney - vocals.
ROG - guitars and keyboard.
Alex Richards - five string bass.

Thanks for listening.

Love Ellie's voice, like the simple string line. Track is outstanding! Thanks for sharing!

ROG,

Really like the overall tone of your production. The guitars, bass and strings are nicely done. Ellie's vocals are a great match for the tracks. They are occasionally difficult to hear (the words) on a first listen - a bit easier on subsequent listens. The chorus vocals stand out well - the harmonies are nice.

One "nit". The programmed drums sound... programmed. Not bad, but a bit "lifeless" for lack of a better word. My suggestion (and take it for what it is...) would be to put the BIAB RealTrack drums to work on your productions (IMO, that alone is worth the price of the program).

Still... a job well done.

When I saw the title I thought "oh No! Not Bet Midler!!" lol!
Not to worry.
I love the sound of the singer and she gets more distinct as the song progresses. Maybe a little db lift for the first verse or so?
I almost had to get the hankie out for this one - great words and the tune and style is nice and commercial.
cheers

This is a wonderful song and production only to be topped of my equally great performances, vocal and guitar tracks.

I agree with floyd and sixchannel about the clarity of Ellie's voice in verse 1 but the lyrics show Eddie is an old romantic at heart.

Hi Rog,

I always enjoy listening to the work of you and your team. This song was no exception. Everyone involved has done a great job. Please tell Ellie that I thought her singing was great. She has an honesty in her voice which makes her vocals very engaging to the listener.

Regards,
Noel

Which is another way of saying I lay my heart on the line too often...

This was written about a fantastic woman here who is a dear friend and sadly will never be more. I see her perform less now, but from the first time I met her and looked into her HUGE blue eyes, I was gone. She knew/knows I feel strongly for her and made/makes sure I knew she was not interested in a "boyfriend" at this time in her life. After being with 2 (count 'em - 2) real skunks, I know I could give her respect and affection she has never seen, but alas.... I need to be satisfied with the status quo and love her "From A Distance".

And that's how the song was born.

And yes, she has heard it, and chose not to comment.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

That is a wonderful tune. There is something about the rhythmic feel that is mesmerizing...and I can't quite articulate what it is. I do agree with others that the vocal could "cut" a bit better through the mix; however, I have to offer the caveat that my ears haven't heard much in the higher frequency range for many years (as with others of my generation) so it could easily just be the pitch of her voice and my range loss. Regardless, I really like it. Well done.

Guys and Gals this is wonderful, a great piece of work, but please remix the vocal and bring the lyric more to the front. Just what others are stating, but I am a little more blunt in my request.

OK Guys, just uploaded an edited version of the track.

Those of you who had trouble with the vocal clarity / volume may find this better. It's the mix we would have done for AM radio. Let me know what you think.

Hi everyone.

Many thanks for taking the time to listen and for all the comments. It's always good to get feedback.

It was interesting doing the AM Radio mix, which was a direct result of the four or five requests for a brighter, hotter vocal. The preferences seem to be split according to age, with the younger members of our team liking the original and this makes me think that we should all start to tailor our mixes for the target audience, always assuming that this is clearly defined.

Still learning after all these years...

Hi Rog
The Remix is so much better. As we get older we do lose some of the bandwidth in our hearing (standing in front of a Vox AC30 on full throttle for years probably hasnt helped either - lol !!) and this Mix stands out clear and bright and I love it even more than I did originally.
cheers

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
