Based on a true story, Aleck Rand wrote replacement lyrics to a song so famous that it's difficult to think of any that are more well known ("Happy Birthday to You"? ... not much comes to mind). I can tell you that the original was done by two ASCAP artists, that the legal work title is Work ID: 490252394, and that my ASCAP license permits me to reproduce the melody and arrangement. Any more information would ruin the surprise. The hero is Big Sol, late father of my best buddy Paul. He was a hard working fur salesman, perpetually on the road. And he was big, both in stature and personality - the kind of guy that could command a room just by walking in. Aleck Rand does the vocals and plays all the non-MIDI instruments except drums, which are handled by RT artist Craig Scott. He arranged the MIDI horn lines to be as faithful to the original as possible. Listen to BIG SOL here: https://soundcloud.com/aleckrand/big-sol

Hi Aleck,
great joke "stole man". Surprise successful. I would have liked to understand the spoken words. Enjoyed it though.

Hi Guenter,
The spoken words are a parody of what you hear on American TV and the end of every commercial advertisement for prescription medications. After showing, say, a romantic couple at the seashore - presumably enjoying life after experiencing the therapeutic benefits of the advertised medication - a very fast talking announcer recites a long list of hideous side effects as the romantic music plays on. Here is what the announcer said in "Big Sol:"

A clever "re-do". Very clever lyrics. Nice production, throughout.
I have enjoyed many of your lyrics (original). You are, obviously, well-versed musically (many genres). Seems to me you could be doing some killer original music and lyrics. Not meant as "a knock" in any way, really. Just think you have all the tools and knowledge and skill to add some beautiful music to this world...

Hey Floyd, I always look forward to feedback from my most fearless critic. This little ditty was intended to give folks a few laughs and it probably did. The following flattery, however, Aleck Seems to me you could be doing some killer original music and lyrics. Not meant as "a knock" in any way, really. Just think you have all the tools and knowledge and skill to add some beautiful music to this world... is just too generous. Frankly, I'm a pretty good arranger, which is what I consider myself to be. But, I'm not a good composer; the best thing I ever submitted was Two Lines of Sight, written by Mark Campellone. I think you're in agreement. But I might be able to come up with something beautiful. Lemme see ... Aleck

Aleck,
I almost missed this one. Glad I didn't! A lot of fun. Very clever. I did get a good laugh out of it! Nice job on the Midi horns.

Aleck, you are clearly a very talented guy! Super job on this song... if you had sung the original lyrics I would have been hard pressed to believe it was a reproduction and not the original!
I've been sequencing horns in some of the classic R&B tunes recently, and I agree with Steve that you did an great job with the horn section in this tune!
Two questions: 1) what synth did you use for the horns? 2) what is the name on the headstock of the guitar in your forum avatar?

Hey Pat - good to hear such positive comments from you.
If I had sung the original lyrics, then there would be no escape from the dreaded "cover" song menace.
The horns are just standard MIDI blown through a Cakewalk TSS soft synth. There's brass ensemble, trombone and baritone sax. They do sound pretty realistic
The name on the headstock of the guitar is Benedetto, after Bob Benedetto, one of the top builders of arch top jazz guitars. A custom piece by him would run around $30,000. The model shown is one of his factory jobs that used to list for $5,000 when it was made (I did not pay this amount). Its successor lists for $11,000! I mean, really, is any guitar worth that kind of money?

Ah, Josie - I see you've joined the cult of fearless critics, which is a great thing. Forum members need candid replies, not flattery. For example, without it I could still be concentrating on far-out jazz that few - in any - members are interested in.
Rewriting the lyrics is a strategy I use to avoid the dreaded "cover" song menace. If some folks get a few chuckles along the way, that's good too. Not every song has to be a profound gut-wrencher that has listeners running for the Kleenex or the Xanax. However, my next post will take direct aim at Floyd's quote.

Why, thank you Steve. It was great fun doing it. I thought the double use of the word "stole" to refer to fur garments and also as the past tense of "stolen" was pretty cool if I say so myself. (My furs got stole, man!)

Mr. Hayes is with B.M.I. Mr Porter is with ASCAP. According to ASCAP: "Title registrations do not serve as a notice of all rights administered for a work. To obtain clarity regarding the rights that may or may not have been licensed to a person, please contact the publisher of the original work." My question would be: Did you obtain the right to re-write the lyrics to this song from the publisher (Warner/Chappell)? If not, you have opened PG Music up to copyright litigation.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
