A bit of a change for me, this one. The idea came from a girl I know who's boyfriend walked out without a warning, or a backward glance. I remember her saying - "He never even took the time to say goodbye". Sounded like a country song to me, so here goes.

It's just me playing a simple line-up of instruments into Power Tracks - Bass (Precision fretless) Guitar (Strat) Rhodes Piano (Forte) Hammond (Trio) and the drums are programmed in MIDI. I did this whilst all the usual girls were on vacation, so my wife stepped in to do the backing vocals.

LINK REMOVED WHILST I GO FOR THE RE-DO!
Why does it always seem to happen
You only seem to miss her when she's gone
Why does it always seem to matter
Exactly who was in the right and who was wrong
I know you'll never understand it
You never meant to make her cry
But there's one thing that you must always do
Just remember, always take the time
Take the time to say goodbye.

Perhaps one day when someone leaves you
Breaks your heart and walks away
When she leaves without a warning
Maybe then I'll hear you say
I know I'll never understand it
You never meant to make me cry
But there's one thing that you should always do
Just remember, always take the time
Take the time to say goodbye.

Hope you like it.

nice work.

the mix is clean.

autotune..... ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! in a country song? This is a sincere "from the heart" song and autotune is so out of place in it. Hip hop and pop , yeah, country, no.

I don't know if that was intentional or the artifacts left from trying to "pitch fix" a vocal track.

I pitch correct every sing vocal track I record or am sent. My goal in country music is to do this in such a was that there are NO artifacts left behind. In country the vocals need to sound authentic and not artificial.

I like the song a lot except for the autotuned vocals.

Hi Rog

Really like the build and the harmony vocals. I think the mix was very nicely balanced, and the instrumental break really lends itself to a lovely overall song.

Well done!

Hi Herb.

Fair comment!

Those who have heard me sing before know that I have a voice which is a cross between Dylan and Tom Petty - in other words, one which has had generations of engineers reaching for the autotune.

Country is not normally something which I'd undertake, but this was done over the vacation when none of my singers were available, so it was a case of me and the autotune, or ditch the song. Some you win and some you...

ROG,

I like the song. And the production. I don't get why you would not just sing this as "yourself". You have a VERY cool singing voice!!
No need to try to force this to be "country". It sounds like a "pop ballad" to me, anyway. Like it belongs in a chick flick. And that is in no way derogatory - a compliment, actually.

Let's hear ROG sing this! "Dylan/Petty" chick-flick ballad... THAT would be SO cool....

Everyone together now.. DO O-VER... DO O-VER... DO O-VER....

Hey ROG,

This is just beautiful, the song, the vocal, the arrangment and great mix. I really like it alot but....yeah, there is a but coming.... <grin>

But for me, the T-Pain/Cher effect was distracting, guess I'm old school. I heard Tim M. use it in one of his country songs on a tv special not too long ago but not throughout the whole song. I do hear it on some pop songs all the way through but I'm not a big fan of it.

Regardless of my personal taste, well done.

Well, guess I'll wait for the remix -- didn't get to hear the original. I'll have to google autotune. I get from the context of the post what it does but I know zip about it. Cher? I know she had a lousy voice but was that even after correction of some sort? And the technology was available then?

Cher used autotune in this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uu3kCEEc98

hard to miss the vocal effect. T-Pain also used it to excess. Now every hip hopper wants to use it. It is the ultimate fx for non-singers to use to disguise their horrid vocal abilities.

Rog,

Remember Ray Charles, Dean Martin to mention a couple did not have country voices but they "SOLD" every country song they recorded.

I can't wait to hear it.

Later,

Many people obsess over their voices.... thinking they sound bad. The best option is to sing it straight up anyway.

Truth: Quite a few people sing better than their opinions of themselves.

Don't try to fix what you think is a poor singing voice by autotuning it or covering it with FX thinking that solves anything. It simply makes matters worse in many cases. Sing. Season it with a bit of light reverb and some EQ.....and if you're not happy with it, work on learning to sing better or get a friend who's voice you do like, to sing it for you.

Singing is like playing an instrument. Practice it everyday, get some lessons to learn a few things faster, and you will improve with time and practice.

Remember that "Truth"......^^^^^

Hi Herb.

I was happy with your earlier criticism, but I feel you're going for the over-kill, here.

And a great many think they sing better than they actually do. It's important to know one's limitations and work within them.

Thank you, but I've been doing this job commercially for over forty years. If you listen to our regular singers, I taught them all from being absolute beginners. Whilst I'm always striving to improve everything I do, I have to be realistic about how much my own voice is going to change from here on. Natural ability comes into play, here and no amount of practice is going to alter that. I'm not a natural singer, even though I can still coach the others - this is why most of my songs are sung by the people I teach. From here on I'll stick to what I do best.

I still agree that you were right about the autotune.

ROG.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
