This is a song I wrote in 1974. It is a continuing work in progress since then. I have re-worked in several times over the years but I've not been able to match the original demo back in 1974 recorded with the band Angel Oak mostly because of the great harmonies in that version done on the bridge. It didn't make the cut on our album but I always thought it was a good song. This current version is the beginning of another revision and at this time contains a scratch lead vocal, no harmonies and lacks an instrumental break I am working on for just before the bridge. This is the first ever version to contain a piano or strings, thanks to BIAB. I'm pretty excited about how the piano fits. Decided to post to see if any on the forum may have other suggestions as well.

Nice work Charlie!! Great feel! I love the vibe, and I love your vocal. Sounds like a little Grateful Dead influence. I might try putting a little verb on the vocal but just a touch-the very dry sound suits the song and your voice. Great work. Take care. Greg

Pretty good. I don't think I've heard this song before. I like the laid back feel to the song. The way this came out I don't think harmonies would add anything. Instrumentaion choices are good. I didn't hear the steel track but the strings pad on the last verse is a nice touch.

I'm hesitant to try and imagine how the finished production will sound since I like this version so well.

Way to go Charlie... this proves that music has no age. 1974, you say? Well, this sounds good to me. Good old Country style.

Very well done!

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks to all for listening and commenting.
- Greg - The vocals are doubled with reverb on one track and the volume lowered under the dry vocal. I'm usually heavy handed with effects but will likely give more presence to the reverb vocal. Thanks for listening.
- Jim - the steel track was removed and replaced with the strings. I overlooked removing it from the list.
- RichMac - Thanks for listening. Wrote this song so long ago there was still some country left in country music. The BIAB piano track reminded me of Charlie Rich style.
- MikeK - I appreciate you taking time to listen and comment.
- Boehm - Thanks. I'm trying to retain the originality of the song and use BIAB real tracks to make it more contemporary.

Charlie,

A good grouping of tracks for this. Your vocal is very nicely recorded - with a nice intimacy to it - just right for the song.

IMO, the piano ought to be brought out more and the acoustic guitar pulled back a little. That piano is so very nice.

I enjoyed the song. It's still going through my head - like I've known it a long time - that's a great quality.

This is the second heartbreak song i have heard today. I like the tune and the interlude .."you used to be..." Was a nice change. I can almost hear it modulating to another key after that to lift it even further. Great choice of styles for the sentiment.

Hi Charlie ...

My (Alan's) daughter lives on Hilton Head Island. South Carolina is a very pretty area!

Very nice traditional country song. we enjoyed the chord progression on the chorus. I worked on a song from 1978 until 2004 ... so I know what you mean about the process! Nice listen ...

All the best,

Alan & Di

I appreciate you guys stopping by to listen.

- Floyd - Thanks for your comments. This song is very much a work in progress and I posted to get some insight from the group to help it along. I agree with your suggestions and will adjust the piano and guitar.

- nobillis - Thanks for your kind comments. Like you, the bridge has always been my favorite part of the song.

- Dani - Thanks for stopping by and leaving your nice comment. I got to meet Jim Reeves when I was just a child. Hadn't written the song then - Fate - what can I say?

- Alan & Di - Thanks for listening. I've spent a lot of time in Hilton Head with my work before retiring. It's quite a place with many celebrities and big corporate CEO's and the like living there. I'm up the coast from there living on the old family farm near Myrtle Beach. I grew up in the Charleston area.

Hi Charlie,

Like the traditional whispering Bill Anderson vibe.

You know the old saying some songs are 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

Heck, it might have been ol' Bill that said it - he's been writing a long time. smile

Thanks for listening Josie.

In this instance, it was 100% desperation! My wife was still sleeping and I was wanting so much to do a vocal track that I couldn't wait any longer for her to wake up so I was trying to be quiet.

I like the flow of the arrangement the way it is here. The lyrics don't feel rushed or crowded so I don't hear a dire need for any kind of brake in the flow of the narrative.

much enjoyed!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
