This is a rewrite of a song that Charlie Fogle posted a short time ago.

Here's the link to his original post: http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=280451#Post280451

I PM'd Charlie and asked about recording the song better. That entailed starting from scratch. I also inquired about having the original singer sing it. That wasn't possible due to circumstances so we moved forward with plan B.

What I did: I rewrote some of the lines trying to maintain as much of the original as possible. I moved some things around, dropped one of the verses that repeated and wrote a chorus. I also renamed the song from Cheating Songs and Old Milwaukee to One More Round.

Tracks are:
Vocals, lead guitar, electric rhythm guitars: Herb Hartley
Drums: RD Nashville Sw 8
Bass: 539
Guitar: 959
Steel lead 1504
Steel 617
Piano 1855
Piano solo 2225 x2
Fiddle 2120

ONE MORE ROUND

This was one fun song to help write and record.... I had a blast.... hope you enjoy the song too.

Herb/Charlie,

Cool that you are collab-ing on this. Sounding good.

Since you are re-writing some lyrics and added a chorus, you might consider the line
"There is no cure and that's for sure but there is one thing I know"
You don't tell us what that "one thing I know" is.
"Well Set me up bartender make it one more round to go" doesn't really seem to "answer it". So it's kind of just left hanging there.
Perhaps if you replaced "Well.." with "You need to..." (if that was your intent).

The piano sounds a bit "odd" at times - like it needs some reverb. It's very dry and doesn't fit the rest of the mix to my ear. And the ends of the fill phrases sound like they drop off abruptly - sounding "less than natural".

Not to detract from what you are doing - like I said, I think it's cool y'all are doing this - and the rest is sounding good...
Sounds like you had some fun singing this.

R& AM.... thanks...

Floyd... good points all... and there's a few nother things that I hear in it now that are less than optimal... so I may try to fix those things sometime later this week.... The whole mix doesn't sound like my normal mixes.

Nice job!! The bones of the song are very cool but you gave it a nice chiropractic adjustment and made it tighter and better flowing. Very cool! Take care. Greg

Listened to both versions, agree with Greg.
Loved the piano/guitar solo part

Love the "That's right, fill it up" part smile

Greetings,

Fred

I like this very much. I agree with the points that Floyd made though.

I really liked the 'playing no show Jones' line and it got a big smile here!

Gotta run, you made me want a beer!

Greg Fred, Mario.....

Yup... this was pretty good writing to start with .... Yeah Mario, several of the original lines got a big grin outta me....

VERSION 2 is officially up..... bottoms up again.

Minor fixes to some lyrics.... pushed the band up a few db and verbed the keys a bit.... and tweeked some high end eq.... to me it sounded a bit too dull.

Hi Herb and Charlie,

nice to collab on this.
I also liked the original but it had some timing issues.
That's all fixed now. You had fun with it. So had I.

To Charlie and Herb

I really enjoyed this song both times, but for different reasons.

Herbs is a lot more upbeat and danceable, whereas the original was a bit more downtrodden. Herbs protagonist was having a beer to celebrate a new direction and new future... the first beer of his new found freedom.

Charlies protagonist couldn't drink beer without being reminded of the past.

I'd probably like Herb's version better at a live gig, and maybe Charlie's version in a juke box while I sat there feeling introspective and analytical about the way life was going.

Great collaboration! Kind of like one of those remix contests, where several people record their own version of the same song

Boehm.... yep... the new version fixt a few of the issues....

Pat..... I did in fact change a few things.... as I listen, I hear other things that perhaps should have been obvious earlier but weren't.... so with my studio, the fixes are generally quick and easy to make.... most of the time.

gruverider.. that's the purpose of collaboration... the sum of the parts becomes greater then the individual parts.

I'm glad you all took the time to listen and enjoyed the song...

Herb, Nice job on this. Great vocal- sounds a lot like Paycheck. The ending is killer. I listened about five times. There are two very minor things that I would change. The steel intro sounds thin at 09. compared to the first 8 seconds. It makes it obvious that it was comped. The second thing is at 46 sec the bass begins a walk up to the 4 chord when it should be on the one. Neither one of those things are glaringly bad, but I hear them. I sometimes generate a second bass part and l work with both of them in case there are a few spots that don't walk where I want them. Really good mix and I sure do like a good country song, which this is. Tom

Dittos on the bass. But that being my instrument I don't mean to overstate it.
Cool collab. Mix works well on my KRK's. I like Pat's description of the two
versions.

I almost let this slip by without adding my comments on Herb's superb work on this. There was a bit going on off-forum via dropbox and email and several times earlier just as I would get ready to post, a revision would be proposed or Herb would complete one and I got side tracked.

One side note - I removed my version from Soundcloud as I have the free account and wanted to free up some space from the limited amount that comes with the free account.

It was a pleasure working with Herb and working with him revealed to me the scope of what he puts into a song and that he has his workflow to the point his results are consistently upper tier quality.

At one point we thought the songwriter, Austin was going to participate with the vocals but he had a relapse from a recent serious illness and ended up in the hospital. Herb didn't miss a beat and skipped to plan B. Herb graciously provided a sound track and hopefully Austin will give the song a try with his vocals. He absolutely loved the radio ready, top notch production Herb did with the song.

This is probably the biggest transformation of any song I have been associated with and I can't call it anything other than - vision - ... This project was more than fun to work on and quite an eye opener to me to what can be accomplished with BIAB when placed in the hand of an expert.

Herb is a serious player and anyone should jump in head first if an opportunity ever arises to work with him.

Herb definitely refreshed and improved this song and I truly appreciate both the opportunity to work with him and his graciousness to offer such quality and expertise to me.

Herb was still working on this song when I visited him, and I let the video recorder run as he talked about his approach to the song and recording in general. As soon as I get all the videos uploaded I'll post links to Herb's video here, since it relates directly to this song.

My hat is off to both Charlie and Herb... great write and equally great remix/reinterpretation!

Herb & Charlie,

Very nice collaboration. Enjoyed the surprise ending.

Herb, pretty good rewrite. The song has a nice flow to it. You have a good feel and ear for the music.

One nit picky thing is the Nashville swing 8 RealDrum track. While it matches the song the missing fourth beat on the cymbal is distracting to me. I feel the drums are dragging the song. Typically a drummer would play sixteenth notes on the cymbal for all four beats. The pause on the fourth makes it feel as though the drummer is running out of steam.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
