Stranger at the Gate
by David Snyder

https://soundcloud.com/david-snyder-gigs/stranger-at-the-gate

V1

Girl I think you know I’ve never loved
Someone as good as you before
But the stars just gave me courage so
I thought I’d knock upon your door
I have no way of knowing
If I’m what you’re looking for
But if we dive into that ocean
We might find out for sure

CH:

Cause I am just a stranger at the gate
And I hope that I have not arrived too late

V2

Girl I think you know
I’ve never seen these city streets before
But I’ve heard about America
From the ones who came before
And there’s a lady in your harbor
With her lamp held to the wind
I have crawled upon my knees to her
Once I reached the end

CH:

Cause I am just a stranger at the gate
And I hope that I have not arrived too late
Cause I am just a stranger
And I do not know my fate
But I hope that I have not arrived too late

V3

And if your God he does decide
To ever let me in
I will ask him if he really thinks that I have ever sinned
Or if everything we’ve ever feared
Was just magic and pretend
If those I thought were enemies
Were really my best friends
And if he asks me what I have to say
I will say it once again

CH:

I am just a stranger at the gate
And I hope that I have not arrived too late
Cause I am just a stranger
And I do not know my fate
But I hope that I have not arrived too late
I hope that I have not arrived too late

David,

You certainly come up with a lot of cool titles.

Like Greg said, the "whirling musical feel" of this is really cool. I had the sense that the instruments needed to "come forward" (be louder?) - they had an "in the distance" thing...

Each of the verses (lyric) were very interesting (you excel at including interesting thoughts in your lyrics)...but they each seem to head off in their own direction... I liked each of them. The ending is super cool...

Your mind must never stop. How do you sleep?

Hi David,
I also love the heady feel to your backing here - its an intoxicating sound, especially the guitar at the end.
For me the lyrics get deeper as the song progresses- these lines are great and seem very timely:

And there’s a lady in your harbor
With her lamp held to the wind
I have crawled upon my knees to her
Once I reached the end

That was a very interesting piece - a bit of Dylan a bit of Springsteen & you.
Good lyrics and a really nice outro. Well done.

Thanks Floyd. I am in experimental mode these days in all areas, lyrical and musical. I fiddled with that mix a lot to get that swirling sound. It was a tricky blend. I can go back for another listen though. I was mostly interested in the drums and a very particular ambient sound on this one. Again, an experiment.

The lyrics were crafted that way to take you on three stages of the character's journey. The last verse asks, essentially, "Aren't we all just strangers at the gate?" which creates a circle back to Verse 1.

As for the word "sleep" that you used, I not familiar with this strange term and perhaps I should look it up. Is it something you earthlings do? I must confess it is not in my vocabulary, but I am not from here, as we have discussed.

Thanks guys! It is hard for one's imagination not to get fired up once you have seen someone's face on the backside of a dress.

From there, all bets are off.

Thanks for the constant inspiration, Netherlands style.

I'm hearing 90's Henley in terms of production. This is so different from your last one, but equally good in a whole different direction.

I take it the theme is about the issue of immigrants, illegal or otherwise, and the topic of refugees too. That assumption is the only premise that binds everything together in a way that makes sense to me. In the context the lyrics are downright inspired.

I like the chord progression and the way it works with the instrumentation. It all flows together so well

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
