The Paradox Of You

Another version of Joanne Cooper's lovely lyrics set to music. I wanted to experiment a little with loops and styles on this. I'm not sure what style it is exactly but I'm leaning towards calling it Neo-Folk/Newgrass. Let me know if you have any other suggestions for labeling it. I really liked this Real Style when I came across it. Then I just went kind of crazy adding other parts. Let me know what you think.

Real Style - Fervent Bluegrass Tom Groove - 85 BPM

Real Tracks:
2474: Bass, Acoustic, Held
1766: Mandolin, Rhythm Pop
676: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Folk Rock Brit
623: Banjo, Background, Backporch
2883: Pedal Steel, Background Country Eddy
821: Mandolin, Soloist Bluegrass (Bluesey)
1329: Medly (Acoustic Guitar solo ONLY)

Real Drums: Metal Slow Big Tom Groove
Loop: World/Cuban Cajon 122
Loop: House/Techno/Trance Crunchy

Lyrics: (by Joanne Cooper)

Listening to the pouring rain
I know the sun will come
Light from dark dry from wet
When wintertime is done

I see myself as the earth
You the vast blue sky
Sometimes I keep you grounded
And you just let me fly

Chorus
I love it when we talk
I love the silence too
I love the yin and yang of life
The paradox of you

You are my harmony
the balance that I find
through the windows of my days
In corners of my mind

Sometimes you are the roots
growing in the night
Sometimes I am the leaves
bathing in your light

Chorus
I love it when we talk
I love the silence too
I love the yin and yang of life
The paradox of you

Bridge
In and out, hot and cold
Fear and courage, young and old
Good and bad, salty sweet
Up and down, messy neat

Chorus
I love it when we talk
I love the silence too
I love the yin and yang of life
The paradox of you

That was a good vehicle for the lyric, Samuel. A very nice collection of tracks and loops to make a good coherent sound. And a strong vocal.

Nicely mixed.

Not often someone can get me to "sit still" for a 6 minute song...but that worked. And a nice ending.

Excellent submission Sam! Loved all the instruments you put in there, especially that banjo. The pedal steel sounded great too. Those real drums sounded big too, loved that. Your vocal reminded me of "Sympathy for the Devil" a little bit from the Stones. Great work!

Thanks Floyd. Yes it turned out a little longer than expected but sometimes the song just goes where it wants to go. I don't try to impose limits on the length of my songs unless necessary. If it ends up being a 10 minute song it is what it is.

LOL Its funny you say that. I could hear that tune in my head a couple times while working on the instrumental. I didn't intentionally mean fo it to feel that way but it works.

My immediate thought when I heard the driving 1/4 note kick drum was Waylon Jennings. Really good interpretation on this.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Samuel, you took this to a place it needed to go! That was SO cool to listen to. That groove, oh so perfect. You have a perfect voice for this as well. The production sounds spot on for the style too. All around, I'm REALLY impressed. Thank you so much for doing this version!

"This song is hard to explain. Just listen."

It's so true though. All you really need to do is listen and you can see how wonderful your version of the song is. Honestly, it's hard to pick a favourite when you're all so talented and creatively putting your own spins on these lyrics. Awesome job.

I especially love the sound of the banjo! Great job.

Cheers,

Hi Samuel,

Big Sound! The drums and banjo lead this down a real sweet path. Your voice works perfectly for this. The Mandolin lead was a real nice touch. This is really nice work. SOunded great to these old ears!

Thanks Al. I think the layering of the drums and loops worked really well to give it that big sound. I may go back and redo the vocals plus add in some harmony parts at a later time. My voice was tired from a long weekend of gigging but I wanted to get it recorded and posted here before FAWM starts in a couple days.

I'd use Tom's genre name of "Appalachian Honky Tonk" rather than Newgrass. But I'm biased having played in a newgrass band or two. BUT, who cares? It's a very cool and well produced version of this song. I'm with floyd on the length...holding me for that long other than for nice jammy blues happens but is rare; however, we found it easy to listen to this a couple of times back to back. It's that good and interesting and ultimately very engaging with the fine vocal and build.

Great interpretation!!

Excellent version, this song has a strong live feel. Those drums and loop sound like thousands of people stomping the ground on a big outdoor festival during the sixties. Nice folk melody and superb vocals.

I've never heard of Appalachian Honky Tonk before. It sounds interesting.

Tom made it up to fit some of his material and a few other songs he'd heard that are usually captured under the "Americana" genre.

Samuel,

We thought this was just another folky banjo tune.
But then we heard that cool beat coming in and a very pro vocal!
This is super.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
