I'd written most of my songs on acoustic guitar, and that continued when I got my first version of BIAB and started transferring chords to the program. When I began to get the hang of it, though, I wanted to do things differently. I never touched the acoustic in writing this song...chords, structure, tempo, feel, and key were "determined" in BIAB.

I sent the midi to a frequent collaborator, and he 1. Played and recorded live drums, 2. Replaced most of the BIAB guitar with lines from his home-made stringed-instruments (somewhat pitch-shifted). 3. Used the BIAB midis as starting points for the horns.

The bassline and organ (changed to accordian) came from BIAB through his soft-synths. The only bit of the GM stock sounds from the midi are the little solo guitar riffs between sections. They were such a sweet little riffs and so hooky that I wanted to keep them, and it's strange that they grabbed so much of the attention in the final mix.

All his files were sent back to me where I did the final arrangement and mix trying to keep the dynamics flowing.

This was made for the 2008 RPM Challenge and from start to finish took just a few days.

This used two separate BIAB midi styles at two different tempos. Just wanted to "Spotlight" what can be done with the program as a sketchpad, a creative aid, and a generator of hooks.

Her Own Museum

Lyric:

I was doing a search there on Yahoo
Reading headlines like smart people do
Kylie Minogue’s got a museum
Like her hot pants? You can see ‘em!
I won’t be in line. How 'bout you?

I have wept in the garden at Graceland
And I’ve toured the downstairs of the King
And I’ve visited the shrine
to the late, great Patsy Cline
Man, there was a pair that could sing

Bridge: Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
and the notion’s got me little bit vexed
Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
got me wondering what sub-legend is next

I proudly fly my freak flag at half mast
on the passing dates of Hank, George and John
Momma wore out many needles
Spinning 45’s of Beatles
And way too many great ones that’s gone

I have only so much room in my heart now
So pardon me if I can’t get enthusiastic
Maybe her hot pants would be dear
If she showed up in 'em here
I’d try my best not to go all spastic

Bridge: Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
Give the fan-boys something to do
Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
When is one…gonna get erected for you

Bridge: Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
Everybody’s back needs a little pat
Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
If she wants one, what’s wrong with that?

Well I’m sure that she is a fine lady
Since she’s got a museum and all
Shouldn’t get in such a tizz
when you don’t know who she is
You wanna go? Go…have a ball.

Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum
Kylie Minogue’s got her own museum

Hello ...

Cool! From your info, i really wasn't sure what to expect. Vert creative use of BIAB and your lyric is equally creative. I've been a big fan of evolving choruses (which you labeled as a bridge here - makes no difference) when appropriate. It certainly works in this one!

Enjoyed my listen - really cool song! My museum is still in the planning stages. Since I'm almost 72 years old, I'm not counting on its completion!

Thanks for a great listen.

Alan

Great results from your experiments with BIAB! I agree that the little midi phrases were attention-grabbing between verse and chorus, and you expertly used the 2 different styles--that can be distracting if not done so well as you have done! And I really liked your friends home-made string contribution, very unique sound! Vocals, production, etc. was great.

And regarding your lyric idea--I hope each one of us has our own little museum, in our minds, with personal jewels, like this song, that we go back to and love on whenever we feel down.
Thanks for sharing!

Tangmo,

A fun listen. A couple of real chuckles in the lyric.

A really interesting mix of instruments - had a kind of Randy Newman thing happening.

(I thought the vocal could have some high EQ rolled off to give it more warmth - or some low-mid bump. The high EQ of the string instruments is competing with it at times).

Wow - what a unique and inventive tune! Really attention grabbing, and certainly a unique experience. The vocals are strong, and groove is really smooth too. And of course, those lyrics are fantastic.

Really well done - thanks for sharing smile

Thanks, Gentlemen.

I think this lyric can serve as a footnote in the discussion of the musical generation/genre gap I've read and participated in for years. Kylie Minogue's got her own.

If I get around to remixing with newer and better skills, I'd probably be more likely to warm up the hand-made instruments and adjust the panning better. Also, do some micro-adjustments to portions of the vocal levels to keep them from fading out. But I agree there is "conflict" there. Thanks for the ears.

Thanks, Scott. I was very blessed/lucky to have met people like Phil, that drummer.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
