the first time
first time I held you
held you in the bright room
just for a moment
for a moment I knew

the anchor
anchor of your finger
a grey gull
grey gull that flew
one thing you`ll ask me
ask me too soon
give your flight its due

you are
you are the arrow
your eyes pass through my soul
beautiful arrow
you`ll never fly
down your road alone

will I always
always hold you gently
I know you`re not wood and stone
it won`t be easy
letting you go

hands reach
reach for rain on the window
starlight
starlight in skin and bone
so soon you`ll ask me
ask me to show
your ticket home

you are
you are the arrow
your eyes pass through my soul
beautiful arrow
you`ll never fly
down your road alone
never fly
down your road alone

Robert,

A unique look at the subject of parenthood (all your lyrics are so uniquely original). It progresses well. An interesting choice of backing - for the subject matter, I was not expecting something so "upbeat".

A good vocal. A good mix. There is almost a syncopation to the drums. I've never heard that from the NashvilleEven8 kit (perhaps you used pushes on the chords?).

Enjoyed the listen.

Robert

Nice work on this, not surprisingly poetic, and evocative. A nice relaxed vocal, and a good arrangement.

Very nice.

Now that's what I've come to expect from you. A song that zigs where I expect it to zag, and makes me pay attention all the way through.

As others said, it's got a very poetic feel than a song.

Good stuff! laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Nice set of metaphors - a long way from the cliche's usually assigned to the subject.
Even more Tom Rapp than usual - that's an excellent thing.

Creative write as always!

One of your best vocals I think.

I really like the way you have been handling the background vocals on your last few songs, not sure if I mentioned that before. Very effective!

Also liked the arrangement and mix.

Good song, Robert, enjoyed!

Robert, I think this is one of your best, if not the best, songs to date, both in lyrics and vocals.

Its all been said so all that I can add is WOW this is really good!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Great vocals on this one...
They really shine...
Perhaps it was the way you delivered the lyrics...
Whatever it was...
I certainly enjoyed listening to this one.

Floyd,
The lyrics were half written many years ago with some of that exhausted euphoria many new parents feel still fresh. I had tried to turn it into a kind of Jackson Browne ballad, but it sounded kind of preachy... 30 years later maybe its easier to make it something lighter with brighter music.
Yes, there are a few pushes on the chords that give the drums that feel.
Thank you for your positive impressions.

Beautiful song Robert!! Some really poetic touching images. I love the musical changes and the flow of the song. I wrote a song Sea of Life in which I tried to describe the period right after birth (not that I remember) in the first verse. Really enjoyed this tune!! Take care. Greg

Sorry for the late reply. Have not been spending much time on the forum as we having such a terrible summer with rain. Been trying to get outside when the sun finally shines.

I think I have a new favorite :-). Another beautiful song Robert. Such a lovely way to express your love for being a father. And your vocal was so good on this song. Well done..

Thanks for your comments- my cliche detector still sees a couple in this one, but sandwiched in more original lines, I can live with that.

Dave,
One of the best things about this forum is when listeners notice your efforts to improve. My harmonies get more attention to eq and my old friend cut-and-paste these days!
Thank you for the positive review.

That is a fine vocal...it drips emotion and sincerity.

And it is perfect for the lyric. Love what floyd said, "all your lyrics are so uniquely original." Indeed.

The harmony is nice -- well mixed -- just the right touch.

The BiaB style you selected is an excellent match to, well, your style!

Lovely production...really enjoyable.

Wow - what a tune! There are multiple points that caught me off guard in the best way. Your vocals are gentle and beautiful on this, and the instrumentation is lush and equally gorgeous. And wow, are those lyrics ever powerful.

I wouldn't change a thing - thanks so much for sharing smile

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
