GOING BACK TO CHICAGO

Drivin'out of Jackson while the moon is high
Headin’ north on Interstate 55
Headin’ for a place I once called home
For the first time in a while I feel alive.
Crossin’ Big Muddy as the sun comes up
The river takes on a silv’ry sheen
Glance in the rearview; catch a glimpse of Memphis
Fadin’ fast - just like my old blue jeans.

Goin’ back, goin’ back to Chicago
Where we said our not-so-fond goodbyes
Don't know if she'll listen to a word I'll say
I just know in my heart I have to try.
Goin’ back, goin’ back to Chicago
Where we said our not-so-fond goodbyes
Don't know if she'll listen to a word I'll say
I just know in my heart I have to try.

INSTRUMENTAL

Friends back in Jackson say, "Forget that girl!
Goin’ back to her would be one huge mistake
She’s sure to be with someone else right now"
But I tell them, “That's one chance I have to take.”
I'll tell her that I didn't mean the things I said
And I'm sorry that I got it all so wrong
I've changed my thinkin’ and I've changed my tune
I'm a diff’rent man, and I'm singin’ a diff’rent song

Going back, going back to Chicago
Where we said our not-so-fond goodbyes
Don't know if she'll listen to a word I'll say
I just know in my heart I have to try.
Going back, going back to Chicago
Where we said our not-so-fond goodbyes
Don't know if she'll listen to a word I'll say
I just know in my heart I have to try.
I just know in my heart I have to try.
I just know in my heart I have to try.

Your vocal is superb! Great imagery in the lyrics. You've created a nice melodic hook in the chorus. Overall, I enjoyed the jaunty, rollicking rhythm of this song.

Hello, 'Ghostgum'...

Your song, 'Going Back To Chicago', is such a 'jaunting, rollicking' tune (as forum member 'Ezekiel's Storm' described it), that it made me want to sing along with it, as I did the second time I listened to it. smile

Musically, it sounds like the Real Tracks you employed were composed, performed and recorded especially for YOU. laugh That's how much of a great fit they were with the wonderfully harmonized vocal tracks you 'laid down'. So great, I think, that the folks at PG Music should change the name of their product to, 'Band (Trying-To-Get-Out-Of) A Box'. laugh

Your lyrics told a story as straight, as true, and as urgent as the (presumably feverish) nocturnal drive you took down Interstate 55, when the moon was high. Your song has great, folksey imagery in it, too:

"...Fadin’ fast - just like my old blue jeans..."

"...Crossin’ Big Muddy as the sun comes up..."

Sweet! Hope the lady takes you back -- metaphorically speaking, but of course! laugh

- bluage -

Thanks so much for the positive feedback.
With a background primarily in 'folk' this was a venture into new territory for me. I must say, there's something truly inspirational about the styles and arrangements in BIAB's Real Tracks.

Thanks bluage,

With superb backing from BIAB the song almost wrote itself. The music and lyrics came fairly fast (although I had to spend some time with Google Maps to ensure geographical accuracy). Add in rehearsal and recording time and I think we were all done and dusted in a little over four hours.

Nicely done smile Delightfully catchy, with a nice upbeat groove and a strong catchy hook. Definitely an earworm. This is the kind of tune that you can't help but smile to. I thought the mix was fantastic too - really professional and concise.

Great work and thanks for sharing!

Hi Brian,

Wow!!!!

This is a great listen on every level. Your writing is incredibly strong, your arrangement carries the listener along on a current of entertainment and your singing is superb!

In addition to the above, the mix is excellent. Everything resonates with clarity and showcases your vocals perfectly.

I really enjoyed where you took me with this!

All the best,
Noel

Thanks Noel, your assessment is very encouraging.

I thought it was one of my better attempts but was not sure how well it would be received.

Kind regards,

Brian.

Nice arrangement, easy confident vocal fits the lyric nicely.

Where we said our not-so-fond goodbyes

Great line.

The harmony gives the song a very "folk" feel.

Very enjoyable!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks, David. Sometimes song-writing is akin to a pregnancy that requires a long and painful labor. This baby just kind of 'popped out' real easy. BIAB makes the process so enjoyable and I don't have to waste a lot of time telling the band what they should be doing (they know their stuff already!).

Nice song with words that flowed well. From the title I was expecting something bluesy, but it's perfectly fine as is. Really nice voice.

Nice performance. Good lyrics and the "band" sounds great.
Unusual song for an Aussie address but it works.
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, Tunemonger.

You wrote, "From the title I was expecting something bluesy..."

Did I miss something? Should the guy be a little sad that he's leaving Jackson and going back to Chicago? (never been to either of those places myself so I don't really know!). Anyway, I picture him feeling more alive and more hopeful than he's been for a while so I thought the backing should be upbeat.

I really like your analogy - most of my songs seem to be the long painful labor type of pregnancy. Anyway, enjoyed the listen. Your voice has a very pleasant "Willie Nelson" type of vibe.

Great funky groove in that style, like made for a travelling song. Catchy sing-along chorus with nice optimistic lyrics. Mix and vocals are top quality.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
