This isn't a political song. Just a song about survival in hard times.

Bass Reeves © 2020 Vic Arnold
V1
Raised as a slave 'til they took him to war
So he ran off and hid out in Oklahoma
Learned from Creek, Seminole, Cherokee
how to survive in this land of the free.
V2
Now as a freed man with colts at his side .
For Judge Parker's deputies, miles he will ride
Shoots with the left and shoots with the right
Took three thousand outlaws, dead or alive.
Ch.
Dark stranger. Where do you ride?
Where ever there's bad men to find.
They once called you "boy", it's hard to believe
but now it's "Yes, Mr. Reeves".
No longer a boy, Mr. Reeves
Inst.
V3
A master of disguise, he'll dress to deceive.
Lives well off the bounty from killers and thieves
Folks never get to see many like him.
Black man on a white horse with indian friend.
Inst.
Br.
The rewards are handsome for dodging the lead.
Food for the family and a roof o'er your head.
Ch.

Hey, good to see you here!

Very nice story with a Marty Robbins feel in the backing tracks.

We listened and promptly checked out Mr Reeves at wiki.
You capsulized his bio really well within your lyric.

Your vocals, arrangement, band and mix all sound excellent on our monitors.

Well done!

J&B

PS: It would be nice to learn what RT/RD choices you made, etc.

Saw a really entertaining doc about this fearsome black lawman in the 'Ol West on FOX channel a few years ago. Never heard of him 'til then.

Your song has a sense of freedom and wide-open spaces about it. Could it be because of a 6/8 meter that somehow simulates the gait of trotting horse? It was a cinch to visualize Mr. Reeves on his, roaming the countryside, hills, mountains and deserts while in pursuit of his prey. Got kind of a mythic feel about it, too, not unlike the songs written and performed by Tim McIntire and John Rubinstein in the movie, "Jeremiah Johnson' from 1972, starring Robert Redford. Regardless, it's an atmospheric, memorable, and historically informative song.

Enjoyed the song - learned something as well. laugh

Like J&B, I also heard a Marty Robbins with the nylon string guitar bits. Nice match between the song and lyric.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thank you David.
Had to do a fair bit of editing on that nylon string guitar.

Thanks Ardent.
I came across his story on the net about 8 months ago by accident.
It just had to be a song.
The wide open spaces feel is I think helped by the delay setting on the vocal and the touch of reverb on the instruments.

Vic, This is a great story song. It entertains as well as educates. I doubt that many people know of him. Great western feel with the Nylon guitar and very well produced. I have heard some of your music in the past and hope you decide to come by more often. Well done and thoroughly enjoyed, Tom

Wow!! Interesting selection of song and subject. You make me feel very very proud !! :-) Nice song and delivery of the vocals. I don't get into all that what chord or how did you mix stuff. I readily admit I do not know a lot about the genre of music so I can't comment on who it sounds like. BUT, I do know that authenticity, delivery, and feel are the MOST important things and to me and YOU nailed it. Good Job !!

I'm happy you were entertained and learned a bit of forgotten history.

There were a couple of horrible low budget movies on him but he's not widely known.

Vic,
I like the story and the way the "voice" of the teller comes in on the chorus.
6/8style and simple arrangement fits well as does your vocal ( which carries that Johnny Cash deep sound of authenticity!).
Well done.

Hello Vic,

You sang a really nice, intriguing song.
The lyrics are nice and (a bit) dark.
I do like it a lot. It's a song that really catches you, I mean me.

At first I thought you sang too close in the mike, but that quickly vanishes.
It is how this song needs to be performed.
Well done,

Hans

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
