One more cigarette

Hi all. I wrote this song 6 years ago.
So it's time to dust it off and give it a new coat of paint.
All comments welcome.

Sitting in my hospital bed doctors had to take one Leg.
Lungs too weak to whistle up the blues.
The nurse is filling out my chart she's concerned about my ailing heart.

Just one more cigarette before I die.

Emphysemas getting me down my chest keeps making a gurgling sound.
Tell me I could drop dead any time.
My situation ain't no joke but I'm just dying for a smoke.

Just one more cigarette before I die.

Chorus
Well I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.
Dropping half-burnt Stogies in the park.
Yes I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.

Just one more cigarette before I die.

Bridge

Chorus
Well I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.
Dropping half-burnt Stogies in the park.
Yes I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.
Just one more cigarette before I die.

That nicotine is what I need lack of it sure makes me mean.
An arm or leg I'd give to ease my pain.
So don't bring flowers don't bring sweets a puff or two will suit my needs.

Just one more cigarette before I die.

Well I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.
Dropping half-burnt Stogies in the park.
Yes I've been blowing smoke rings in the dark.
Just one more cigarette before I die.
Yes one more cigarette before I die.

Please give me one more cigarette before I die.

What a hoot! My first thought was WTH? Then, it struck me as ironically funny.... yep.... I'd say a comical sort of song. Looking at the lemonade side of the thing.

Good job.

Now.... a story. We used to play a club in a town and had a regular following. Among the ones who were there all the time was this one old fellow. He had a serious tobacco habit. In fact, he had throat cancer and they had to put in one of those tracheotomy holes in his throat so he could breathe. He used a voice box that he pressed against his neck to speak. In spite of all that, and the damage done by cigarettes, he still continued to smoke. He'd put the cigarette in the tracheotomy hole and let it hang there. It was a perfect fit. I reckon he figured why not? No one lives for ever.

Hi Rob4580,

I appreciated your well-paced composition with a pleasant arrangement. I have been a smoker since my youth and I understood your well written words because you are addicted to nicotine and changing your habits is not really easy. People die every day from the harmful effects of tobacco. And we smokers, we know the risks and the price to pay of this addiction..

Kindly regard

The new paint suits it!

Good arrangement, lyrics are - as Derochette noted - spot on.

The instruments occasionally get in the way of the vocals. Not a big deal - isn't that the ongoing challenge of mixing?

I enjoyed listening!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Love the humour you bring to your songs, Rob - which in this case not only raises a chuckle, but shines a light on the tragic consequences of nicotine addiction.

Good tune! That really caught me by surprise. And, as a former smoker who still loves them, I get it completely!

Hey Rob ...

It's always a treat to see a new one from you on the forum. And ... the irony of humor and sad truth. Neither Di nor I have ever been smokers. But we both come from a family of heavy smokers. There's a lot of truth in your song ... along with the well-place, poignant humor.

I've played way too many honky tonks and clubs over the years ... the second hand smoke was so thick at times you had to push it out of the way just to walk across the floor.

As always, enjoyed this a lot. Nicely done! wishing you the very best ...

Alan

Argh ... I don't know whether to laugh heartily or clobber that fictitious smoker of the song a good one, haha. Seriously, though, a really great song with a good ol' dollop of dark irony in it. Loved it ... from a distance from the smoke ;-))) Bravo.

They say smoking is more addictive than heroin.
As an ex smoker I found it very hard to kick the habbit.
Thanks for you comment GH

That last line, "Please give me one more cigarette before I die," made me laugh out loud because as any cigarette smoker past or present would know, those little paper tubes stuffed with tobacco sure can reduce a body to begging for one laugh !!!

That 'Memphis Swing' style's got enough joyful rhythm and 'lectric gee-tar strumming to keep a listener slappin' their thighs or tapping their toes long after the song has ended. Only thing that didn't seem quite right was the quality of your singing voice -- you sure don't sound like a heavy smoker! 'Course, you don't have to be smoker to sing about smoking, now, do you???

Hello Derochette. Thanks for the great comment.
Back in the day smoking was said to be healthy.
I am an ex smoker so I understand all the bad health effects
that come with it.

Song One more cigarette
Overall impression
Humour in song is harder than it sounds, many try and fail.
Here it is maintained throughout.
Overall a fun song and an enjoyable listen
Mix / Production
At times sounds a bit cluttered to me – could there be one gtr too many?
Instrumentation
Nice clean rocky gtrs -
I actually like all the sounds except for the lead gtr (solo)
Vocals
Lead vox is nicely sung and in its place in the mix – did you consider adding a harm track – at least in the B section ‘blowing smoke rings in the dark’?
What I really liked
Contrast between the 2 sections which maintains the energy
Contrast between the bouncy upbeat sounding track and the sombre subject matter
What could be improved
I’m not that keen on half rhymes (sweets-needs etc) but I think that’s just me, and – in terms of the rhyme pattern- find the end of the chorus section a little odd (dark/die)
Not really sure where the gtr solo is going.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
