An experiment in the use of non-performance recordings – in this case, of a large wind harp – as material for UserTracks.

No attempt was made to have the audio material correspond in any way with the chords in the UserTrack template – I just paired a couple of SGU files with audio files of sufficient length and let BIAB think it was working with a compliant performance.

The bell-like wind harp sounds here are from a 1972 record "Song From the Hill", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID-kZ2ySHL0. Apologies for the distortion but I pulled this material from ancient vinyl.

Interesting.

I have one question, is this legal? I'm not trying to rain on your parade, those wind harps sound pretty good, but if you put them up on the usertrack forum would PGM and/or you get into trouble? I don't know, just asking.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

I suppose a case could me made that it's not, but Jeez, these might as well be old granular snippets of wind in the trees. No qualms do I have about this sort of personal use. I wouldn't be sharing the UserTracks as such, though, since they do contain the complete original recordings.

That wind harp, which started out in Vermont, is currently on a hill in New Hampshire, a few miles from me, having been destroyed and reconstructed a few times over the decades. I know it well. It would be nice to go out there one day with really good audio equipment and make some new recordings.

Hey, that would be an honor, I love that music.

Here's somebody who did not like the old record very much:

http://stereosanctity.blogspot.com/2007/11/wind-harp-songs-from-hill-united.html

“It is undoubtedly a spiritual sound, just not in a way that I suspect either the record company nor the hippies were anticipating. Certainly anyone sticking this on to accompany a meditation session or drug trip would get more than they bargained for; bummers, paranoia, bloody noses; all are possibilities. For however much we may be taught to view nature, and atmospheric conditions / weather systems in particular, as an entirely beautiful, harmonious system through which we can gain understanding of ourselves via an impression of dissolution within it’s patterns, it swiftly becomes clear upon dropping the needle that the sounds emerging from this here Wind Harp were REALLY F*CKING MALEVOLENT.”

“Regardless of questions of authenticity though, The Wind Harp certainly makes for a hell of a listen, and comes recommended should you be feeling a little too comfortable in your life, and in need of a glimpse of the blind, chaotic and ultimately destructive natural forces at the mercy of whose temporary placidity we erect our fragile civilisations.”

Imagine, if you will, a world...

a world where a man looks like a dog

in a sailor cap...

with a star....

a world beyond sight and sound and dimension

a world where tiny bands live in a box and wind harps speak in the voices of demons

some say it is not real

unless

you have entered

high as kite

into

The Twilight Zone

The wind harp itself more recently, in New Hampshire. Photo by George Ewald.

(I notice I had to scale down the image to get it to display inline here. Anyone know where that cutoff is?)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
