I was thinking about a time in my early twenties when I was afraid of commitment and I was faced with the decision to stay on the road or settle down. 4 kids and 6 grandkids later I know I made the right choice. So this song is about a time and place in the distant past. I guess it's my ode to self loathing. Hope you like it. Comments /Suggestions encouraged.

If I Were You

If I were you I'd leave me get over us for good
I don't think I can ever be the kind of man that could
Settle down and see if I could work up the nerve
To give you the kind of life a girl like you deserves

Please don’t say you love me I'll surely let you down
I'm thinking you’d be better off not having me around
You should turn and walk away it's not hard to see
That I'm afraid I'll break your heart
If I were you I'd leave me

I've always been the traveling kind who never could stay put
A rolling stone a rambling man who couldn't put down roots
I've never needed anyone I'm on this voyage alone
It's who I am and what I do and all I've ever known

Please don’t say you love me I'll surely let you down
I'm thinking you’d be better off not having me around
You should turn and walk away it's not hard to see
That I'm afraid I'll break your heart
If I were you I'd leave me

Hi Tom...

You did a nice job of telling an old theme in a new and fresh way...that's not easy to do but you pulled it off quite nicely. Sounds like a song a musician would sing to his girlfriend.

I'm a traveler at heart and it's cost me in a lot of ways. But it's in my blood. that was a great listen. Thanks for the fine entertainment....

Al & Di

PS: if I were you, I'd keep writing fine tunes like this!

Good song Tommy, I'm just guessing here but I would think they are many a musician who would relate to that lyric.

I never tire of the rambling man songs even though I'm 32 years into a wonderful marriage and have no desire to roam. But 30 years of bluegrass playing just endeared me to this type. What I'm trying to say is that I've heard a lot of the and this is a good one. How does it differ from the average ones? Well, I think it's the weariness that comes through on the vocal. It just works. Works really well. It talks to you. And it rings authenticate. Thanks for the post.

Tom,

A good production and mix. Your vocal on this is really solid.
The harmonies are TIGHT! Did you sing those? They sound real (sung),
but they are so tight - if you generated those would like to know with what...

Really like the chorus. Was kind of wanting (expecting) the verse melody to go someplace "new" at the third line.. but a that a small nit..

Another good one. You are on a roll!

Tom,
I was expecting a Rock tune for some reason and then I heard the violin....wow.
Then the harmonies came along.... double wow
Altogether that is a beautiful, beautiful song.

excellent

Al, Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate you listening.

Danny, i think many of the musicians on this forum have had similar thoughts at some time. Thanks for listening.

Bud, Thanks for the nice comments. I think I was weary at the time.

floyd, It's all me. The harmonies were double tracked and the lead was double tracked, then spread in the stereo mix. A funny thing happened, in the beginning of the chorus you can hear an out of phase sweep come through on the first line. It sounded kind of musical so I left it in. Happy accidents- i love em. Thanks for your your comments.

Alyn, The rock tunes are in the pipeline. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it.

Dani, Thanks for your kind words. Tom

Tommy,
I can't personally relate to the lyric having never been a real road musician, but the song communicates the emotion very well. Great job!!

I have never been a road musician either but I have seen a lot of local musicians that have written this song.

Everything about this is top shelf IMHO and to pick a favorite thing about this song is extremely tough but for me it was the lyrics.

Great job on everything!

I played this excellent song yesterday but couldn't comment then, as I was reeling from the poignant lyrics.

This is so genuine and honest and with a heartfelt performance. Well done.

Hi Tommy,

Wow! Before I get to the song's writing and performance, I just need to comment on the production. It's ... well it's just brilliant! That RT 1253 Bass is awesome! The depth of tone and quality it adds to the mix is magnificent.

Now, back to the song ...

As Oleman has pointed out, this rings out with lyrical honesty. What I found most interesting was that even though the song is autobiographical, the presentation comes across as a universal theme and did not, at anytime, step into the realm of the personal. That's mighty clever songwriting! As always, your singing is made for each and every song your write. The two are a perfect fit. You really should be on the radio!

All the best,
Noel

P.S. Congratulations on your BIAB 2014 award. You seriously deserve it!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
