This is a song that was written using BiaB .... then real players... 4 total, and Sean's wife Kristi on some vox....... we replaced the BB parts with their instrumental skills. The song has 30 tracks in it in it's final version. Lots of vocal tracks.

The demo is all BiaB with me playing guitar.

DEMO VERSION

The finished version has only a Biab drum track. Real Drums Rock even 8

FINISHED VERSION

I posted both versions..... demo to finished so you can hear how it started, evolved, and how it ended up. People contributed lots of ideas and there were some lyric changes along the way. The biggest difference is in the overall style.

Please don't critique the demo since it is just that...a song demo as a project starting point. rough edges, warts and all. Overall thoughts and comments on the finished project are appreciated. The finished version is my personal mix on this project. If you wish to hear the "official" version, you can find that one posted in the Cakewalk songs forum. Pretty similar actually, but a few variations between them.

Real Players:

Sean: lead vocals and acoustic guitar
Kristi: BGV
Reece: B3 and BGV
Mike: Electric guitar rhythm, bass guitar, and BGV
Herb: Lead guitar solo & BGV

Herb, et al ...

We listened to both versions. The difference is amazing! We particularly liked the way the various instruments were introduced in layers over the first verse. We've always believed that certain songs take on a great dynamic by building the instruments in layers. The two acoustic guitars at the beginning in the final version was the perfect intro for this. The organ was a great choice to further define the genre and message of the song. Everything was mixed to perfection ... as far as our old ears to tell! And the vocals simply soared!

Your final version is fabulous! We enjoyed the power and slow drive. A standing O from Di and me. Vwery nicely done! That was a wonderful listen!

Still standing and cllpping!

Alan & Di

I'll echo the above comments of Al & Di and Alyn. I think the finished mix is the better work between the demo and finished versions with the single exception that I miss the great guitar intro of the demo. I'm sure there was a lot of discussion before the consensus of the collaborative group went for the acoustic intro and instrument build. But for me, my opinion only, the demo intro really has a natural feel for the genre and the energy of this song. This is a really top notch write, production and performance. The hours you guys spent to get it here was well worth the effort.

Hi Herb,

A very powerful song!
Actually, I do also like the demo version.
Of course there are some things to be commented on there, but the vocal for instance is a little bit warmer here and there then the final version (which was sung great by the way). At some moments the sound is also a little bit more intimate.
The final version has more of a 'praise' feel to it.

Very well done!

Regards,
Rob

Al-David: Indeed, the first version was to get the song idea to the other band members. Thank you for the kind words.

Gibson: Sean does indeed have a good voice. He's the worship pastor at his church. That's his wife singing some of the BGV as well. We may need to get her to sing lead on something in the future.

Charlie: I really enjoy playing the leads.... but for the sake of the song, we elected to start it acoustically and let it build rather than coming out wide open from the start with the electric.

R & AM: We were going for the "praise band" groove... looks like we nailed it.

We had many discussions as this song was worked on.... from the lyric changes, to chord changes and back and so many aspects of the production and how the groove should be. In a private forum site that our C-Band has, there are 33 pages and almost 500 posts just on this one song. And there's actually a version 6 by Reece yet to be released to address the Cakewalk forum crits. This version, as I mentioned, is not the "official" version.... it's my version from the same tracks.

Herb,

Hearing both, I liked the guitar intro on the demo best and the first part of the demo chorus lyrics better.

The finished project sounds great. Well done.

Guenter & Josie : thanks.... both of the versions have good things about them that I like.

As a group, the decision was made to go acoustic in the beginning and the electric lead didn't work well in that context.

We're starting work on a second song. I haven't even listened to it closely at this point in time.

Your mix is waaaay better than what you call the official one for a whole bunch of reasons. Your acoustic guitar is better mixed and the drums... no contest (not even close). Vocals, too. You need to get your bandmates to reconsider.

Listening in phones, when the bass starts it is almost overpowering (and therefore, distracting from an otherwise good mix). Like it's hogging the entire frequency range. You get accustom to it after a while, but after the a cappella part, that overpowering sense happens again.

The "whispering" thing is odd in the context of the mix. It seems up-front and dry while everything else is drenched in reverb. It seems "rushed", too. It might work better with some reverb (or a lot) (and with multiple voices). And let it trail off - with an echo as the vocal continues....

The background organ sits in the mix well. The slide under the vocal going into the lead is a little abrupt (imo) - fading that in more would help. The organ lead is a bit "stiff" and would work better if it had a little more "sing" to it.

Your guitar lead is nice. Perfect for the song (the organ lead ought to be something similar - lyrical).

The a cappella part was a nice touch. Was expecting claps to go with it and finish out...

The song works well for a praise song. A good listen.

Floyd.... your comments are appreciated and well taken. Suffice it to say that in a band situation there are certain "limitations" and "dynamics" in play in any given situation and at any given time. I was not and am not a big fan of the B3 part. Reece knows that. I was pushing for the organ to be more of a pad or a bed for a synth lead that used some other sound. There were some frayed tempers throughout this project, as we worked, but we resolved them as they came and ended up still friends.

As a band, and a group of recording musicians, each in our own right, it's hard at times to get others to change their minds about what works best in a given place in the song in a collaborative project like this. I was, at times, a PITB insisting that certain things should be done a certain way because we all had different ideas on the production. I have in my mind, a certain vision for all the songs I work on and this was no different. Trying to steer it in that direction while incorporating the ideas and thoughts of the others was a bit of a challenge. Nit picky stuff like fixing a vox that's very slightly off pitch. Or swapping the B3 and the guitar solos which were originally recorded reversed from their current positions. The vocal part at the end was another point where it was 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.

This collaborative band was the idea of Reece..... and for the first song we did as a group, it was decided that he would be in charge of the "official" mix. A total of 5 people were involved but one had to step out due to family medical emergency issues that consumed his time and efforts.

I will have a look at that bass part and see if I hear what you hear in there. Actually, this mix version was more of an afterthought since it wasn't the official one, and I didn't spend a lot of time tweeking it, so it's totally possible the levels are too high. I will check that later.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

Interesting evolution from demo-quite a different feel. Really beautiful and well constructed song!! Particularly loved the harmony vocals in the the chorus-beautiful!! The singer has some pipes. Reminds me a bid of Styx. I really dig the organ and guitar solos. Great job all the way around!! Take care. Greg

Herb,
Excellent all the way around. I always like to hear an organ in a power rock song.
The bass was a bit loud in my headphones. I also heard a bit of noise in background at the end.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
