I have recently been trying out some new plugins and would very much appreciate any feedback you have on the mixing for this song and whether you think it is an improvement on my previous work (or not!!) as well as what you would suggest I change.

The lovely lyrics to this song were written by Arthur Rossi from 50 90. Arthur is a master story teller.

Midi strings based on vocal

Lyrics:
His mother died when he was seven
his dad just knew to empty jars…
before she left and went to heaven
she gave him this guitar…

She said "at times when you feel lonely,
and you feel like crying, too…
play guitar for one song only
and I will be right there with you…“

(…he played…)

(Chorus)
Sleep well, sleep well,
only love is true…
and even though you cannot hear me,
I am always there with you…

He became the greatest player,
Some folk even called him „sir“…
Said his songs sound like a prayer,
And only he knew that they were

(…he sang…)

(Chorus)
Sleep well, sleep well
only love is true…
and even though you cannot hear me,
I´m always there with you…

sleep well sleep well

He got old and older
the sky was starry when he died…
and the guitar upon his shoulder
played the same old lullabye:

It played)
(Chorus)
Sleep well, sleep well,
only love is true…
and even though you cannot hear me,
I am always there with you…

Mix on the guitar sounds good to me, especially liked how you handled the intro. Vocals are fabulous! Love the echo thing you did around 2:09. Very good song too IMHO. Enjoyed!

Hi Joanne
Well I think the guitar tracks sound great. I dont know what you have as plug ins.
Great lyrics and a super vocal line to compliment it.
Quite an emotive track for me - as a guitarist. (smile)
I liked the concept of using midi synth to follow the vocal line.
Cheers

Hi ian. The plugins are from Slate Digital. http://www.slatedigital.com/ They are running a thing were you can have access to their entire suit of plugins for $14.99 per month so I am giving it a go in the attempt to move my mixing up a notch. The learning cuve is very steep though...

The midi synth following the vocal line is made using Melodyne. You simply save your vocal as a MID file (make sure that the tempo is correct and it works best if you tune your vocal first) and then import the MID file into your DAW. Works quite well. I have used the same technique to follow the vocal line with flutes, violins etc in an instrumental break.

Hi Joanne,

Nothing to worry about there - the guitars sound super.

It's nice to hear the guitars with a bit of brightness and sparkle - all too often they sound great in isolation but get lost in the mix. These are bright and clear and it shows in the way that you haven't had to lift the level to make them ring out.

Very emotive song and a really good mix generally.

ROG.

Beautifully done Joanne!! I'm not listening on a high end system but the mix (particularly the vocals) sounds great. Very pretty song. Creative lyric and a somber feel expertly delivered. Great stuff!! Take care. Greg

Beautiful work Joanne! We especially like the intro, handled very well.
The mix itself sounds bright and balanced enough in our opinion ;-)

Joanne,

I also don`t have high end speakers, but listening back to your Kumbaya track the guitar definitely sounds crisper here.
Its a lovely song and your vocals really shine-very enjoyable!

Joanne,

I think the mix is great and the acoustic guitars sound great as well. What plugins and eqs were you using on them?

Hi ROG, Greg, Rob and Anne-Marie, Robert and David

Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and comment. It is encouraging and I will persevere with these plugins. I had started to doubt myself a bit and am having dreadful trouble with my PC grinding to a halt when using them.

David, I used my usual processing on the vocals, which is just eq out the bottom and add a little lift at about 3K. I also put the lead vocal through Ozone's vocal preset and added a bit of PG standard compression and reverb.

On the bass, guitars and drums I used my brand new shinny slate digital everything bundle (see earlier comment). I just used some "Virtual Mix Rack" and "Verbsuit" presets.

This is my personal favorite from you. Awesome song, arrangement, mix and performance.

My mother passed away when I was 15 and although I grew up in a home surrounded by guitars and music, I did not play until after my mother had passed. Playing guitar was sweet medicine for me to "sleep well."

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed and will be back to listen more.

Hi Joanne,

It's a beautiful overarching sound that you have happening here; your singing, arrangement and mix all work together very well. Kudos to you! The sound of the minor key appealed to me a lot. While I'm not a guitar player, I like your finished result. You've done a great job!

All the best,
Noel

Hello, Joanne

The sound of guitars is pleasant to my ears.
Your vocal is superb and very beautiful.
The chord progressions that come and go between Am key and C major key are very fitted to this folk style song.
They give more sadness to this song.
Very enjoyable listen.

Best Regards.

Shigeki Adachi

P.S.
I also often use Slate Digital plug-in when mastering the mix. (Slate Digital FG-X)

Charlie - that really does bring a bit of a lump to my throat. I can imagine that a guitar would be sweet comfort in that. I did not grow up in a musical family at all and have only had about 4 guitars in all my life (one was stolen as it was in the back of my Citi Golf when that was stolen!). Of course my kids are growing up surrounded by my music but I think that is putting them off more than anything frown

Thank you Noel. I am certainlu not a great guitar player either. Wonderful that BIAB gives us the opportunity to write these types of songs with the professionals backing us up.

Thanks Shigeki. I think coming and going between C major and am is more of a fluke that anything else smile...... I have the FG-X because the "Everything" bundle really does give you everything! I have not used this one yet as I am still using Ozone for the mastering (which I am used to)

Joanne,

Beautiful.

This could almost be a tribute to Leonard Cohen because of the timing

A good way to start my day.

The mix sounds darn good to me Joanne!
We all have different 'mix ears' and there are always multiple ways to mix a song, all good. Guitars sound perfect. My mix would probably have brought the vocals down a tad relative to the instruments and EQ'd a little off the 'top edge' of the lead vocal, making the tone a wee bit smoother. I'd have made the kick drum audible with a bit of 'thump' on its EQ. But we're now talking tiny details.
It's an all round beautiful song and sentiment. Loved it.

John

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
