Here's a new collab with Pat Bishop from Texas. Pat wrote the lyrics with me.

This is country rock along the lines of ...well, you figure it out. See what influences you hear in this.

Perfectly Clear

The players.... all Real Tracks

I'd have to go back and look them up.... Bass, drums, 2 acoustic guitars, piano, fiddle, mando, and dobro.

EDIT: Dobro 2041, Fiddle 618, Acoustic guitars 405 & 522, Nashville even 8 drums, Bass 519.

This has rolled back low end. There's also some ohhs and ahhhs rather than harmony vox.

Crits welcome.

The intro had me imagining a set of players stepping up to the microphone: first the mandolin, then the dobro, then the fiddle gets a lick, and finally the piano player plays his bit and the singer shoos them all away so he can start singing. wink

The entire song goes that way, fitting in the various instruments like a jigsaw puzzle with every instrument filling in, but feeling very organic.

The Oooohs and Aaaahs are subtle - I went back and listened for them when I noticed you used them, and there they were.

Sparkling production all around, nice lyrics, well sung. Sounds great in my headphones.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Herb and Pat this is fantastic. Great intro, super lyrics and vocal along with a fantastic mix. I heard a touch of Willie here.

Two thumbs up.

Excellent piece, great vocals. Play this in any country western bar and you'll have 'em up two steppin to this one.

Nice acoustic based tune. I think that particular mandolin RT's tone makes for one of the most convincing of the acoustic country solo RT's. I've had the privilege of playing with some of the best mandolin pickers and it takes a top tier instrument to sound like that.

Pardon the side track smile Good work also with the production -- really liked the various solos and tasty fills throughout.

Enjoyed it!

Herb,

A nice production on this one. Reminiscent of the "Peaceful Easy Feeling" flow/feel. Moves along well and the various instrument in and out work. Good job of making the piano stand out when need be.

Since you asked (crits) - I thought the vocal needed to be somewhat warmer. It has plenty of "crispness", so rolling some of that off wouldn't hurt. The oohs/aahs tracks are a good idea - but the point at the end where you can really pick them out, they are doing "Aaaahs" - I think "Ooohs" would be a better choice there (not trying to be picky, really).

Very well done, guitarhacker smile I'm enjoying the authentic country vibe on this tune. I'm getting some major Willie Nelson vibes here, which is most definitely a good thing in my books! It's got a great groove, a great vocal performance, and a catchy chorus to boot.

Great work, and thanks so much for sharing smile

That's how I look at the production, each player takes fills. The goal is to make it sound natural.

Thanks for listening.

Pat is certainly a good writer of lyrics, and working with her is always a pleasure. She's never taken offense nor have I at the suggestions made by the other. It's been some time since we collabbed and I think this was a nice one to restart our collabing. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Interesting that you said country gentleman type of song. I was thinking about Bob McDill and Bobby Bare, and Tom T Hall at the start of the writing.... Jim Reeves kinda fits right in there too. Then, there's the bluegrass group of the same name. Kinda like a mix of them all.

Thanks for listening.

When you mentioned 2 stepping, I had to listen again.... never thought of it that way but you're correct.

Thanks for that insight and for listening.

Herb, I met Andy Leftwich 2 years ago at the Strawberry Festival where he was playing with Ricky Skaggs. He told me he checks in regularly to the forum to hear what we’re up to. I sure hope he hears this one. Great editing on the fills and solos. Very well sung and it checks all the boxes on the production end. I loved every measure. Great job, Tom

.

PeterF, thanks. I was looking to keep it as organic as possible without being totally acoustic

Graham, country is far from dead, although there are few that really play the old country style anymore. Thanks for listening.

Janice & Bud, You are absolutely correct about the quality of this mandolin track. Same thing for the dobro and fiddle.... just amazing quality. Yep... getting that quality sound on "tape" isn't an easy job. Glad you both enjoyed it.

Floyd.... thanks. Yeah I think you're right about the warmth of the vocal. Trying to mix the highs are getting harder for these old ears. Those ohhs and ahhhs are kinda sloppy to be honest. Some are a blend of oooaaahhh together and no pitch fixing was done on them. Down and dirty.

Herb,

I enjoyed everything about this - the down home sincerity of the lyrics, rolling melody, terrific choice of RT`s and especially your vocal -just right for this song.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
