Hi everyone,

This is my second post of today. The first one deals with a funky song with Latin touch (On the go), this one is more melancholic and is called Wild Times, https://soundcloud.com/user-296497130/wild-times
The new thing in this song is for the first time I used a pedal steelguitar! I told Janice Merritt I am not so fond of that instrument. But with her songs it work out so well all the time, so I thought I jump into the deep and try that thing. Well, here it is.
The theme of the song is based on the feelings that come over me every now and then. So nothing serious...

The style I used is called Willful. The tempo is 73. Key: Em.
I used 1827 (bassguitar), 2668 (Pedal steel), Retro Popdrums, 1002 (12 strings), 1828 and 3059 (two different acoustic guitars. The last one, muted, is used for the last part of the song), 1543 (synth), 3198 (sologuitar, ac).

I hope you can appreciate this song.

The lyrics
Wild Times
(c) HWBerkhout, July 2019

Stared out of my window, saw the clouds chasing in the sky
It felt a bit cold today
I saw a road near a meadow where cows pass by
I think about them, my way

Stared out of my window, saw the birds flying their way
It felt a bit cold today
Once there were the wild times that formed my day
I think about them, my way

Wild times stay forever
They never fade nor left behind
I cherish their endeavour
to stay combined

My wild times stay forever
They never fade nor left behind
I cherish their endeavour
to sculpt my mind

Bridge
Oooh Wild times
How I long for them today
I wish they never flew
They made my day

Wild times stay forever
They never fade, but left behind
I cherish their endeavour
to sculpt my mind

My wild times stay forever
They never fade, but lost their shine
I cherish their endeavour
to sculpt my shrine

I love the sound - it sounds huge in my headphones, but clear.

Excellent write, production and singing. I enjoyed listening.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Loved everything you did except too much processing on the vocals for me. Of course, there are stars who made their careers on heavily processed vocals, so maybe you're on the right track.

Got some wonderful whiffs of Cat Stevens in this. Thoughtful lyrics. I love the change-up from MIND to SHRINE at the end. They lose a bit from not being 100% standard English, but the mood and feel and sound is spot on. Others may disagree, but I like the processing of your voice. It sets a mood as well as reduces "room" and "boom" and, while it isn't for every song and singer, I like it here.

The band is great and the production work is very good. Very tasteful use of the pedal steel. I remember your comment to Janice, and am glad you took the plunge.

Hello Hans. The beginning reminded me of Hotel California.
I really enjoyed listening to this.
Great choice of band as well.
May just be me but the vocal could have been a little more out front.
Great tune Hans. Rob

Hans,
A cool backing track, melody and lyric but the heavy processing on the vocal needs some taming.
On the very 1st "ch" it was like a whip crack.
You could automate the vocal level of the level of the VST in your DAW.
Very cool song.

Cheers

Hi David, Jim, Tunemonger, Tangmo, Rob and Ray,

Nearly all mentioned the huge sound of the vocals. To me everything sounded normal, so I wasn't aware of it.
But I changed the song in that way. I checked it all in my Daw, Ray.
It must be allright by now (I hope). I was using Neutron 3 (from Izotope) with a visual mixer for the first time. Maybe that caused the soundproblem. But thanks mentioning it!

Tangmo also mentioned my rhyming was not 100% correct (although he liked it). I am the last one disagreeing with anyone that my English is that of a foreigner, but in this case I did it right. The last lines ended with Shine vs Shrine.
And also thanks for all of your nice compliments about the composition and also that pedal steel (Tangmo).

Hans

Janice said the pedal steel works very well smile

Thoughtful and, as you mentioned, somewhat melancholic. A good combination in our book.

As Tangmo mentioned there is a hint of Cat Stevens.

And, as with your other post, the mix sounds great.

Enjoyed it!

Hi J&B,

Thanks you appreciate my tryings with the pedal steel. I heard your song with Floyd. Very nice, but the pedal steel in that song had more variations than I could find in BB for my pedal steel-needs. How did you do that?
I'm realy flattered hearing that I have toughes of all sorts of -old or dead- musicians.

But to solve my curiosity... what book are you refering to?

Bye,
Hans

That wasn't meant as a complaint! I was referring to the reverb giving the impression of a large interior space, but still being clear and not "mushy".

Sorry about not being more clear. blush

Cool song......great feel to it!! Your vocals are excellent....remind me of some of the great old singers from the 60's/70's rock era! Cool arrangement! It really builds nicely. I like the way the acoustic guitars are panned hard each way. Very enjoyable listen!! Take care. Greg

Wow - this is stunning smile The sound is huge, and absolutely sincere. I loved the interesting choice in percussion here. Gave it a modern feel, and added a whole other element. Loved your vocals on this too.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing!

Hans,
Very good track! Pedal steel is a magical instrument and you made a very good use of it.
Vocals / Mix + production is one of the best from your collection. I liked it a lot!

Hi David, Floyd, Greg, Dave, Peter, Deryk, Scott and Misha,

Thank you all for listening and the compliments and suggestions. I keep learning from it all and felt good by your kind words.

David, don't say sorry. You were right.
Floyd, Dave, Peter, Scott, thanks for your compliments. And Deryk, nice to mention the percussionchoice. It was some kind of a search to find in BB what was vaguely in my mind, but found it finally!
Greg, that panning worked out better than I thought! Thanks mentioning it.
Misha, the pedal steel was a bit of a thing, because I also wanted to use the synth (violins) and I was afraid they could conflict. But they didn't. And your compliments about the mix gave me a nice feeling!

So thanks everyone. Have a nice weekend,
Hans

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
