I wrote this back about 9 years ago for my daughters. Advice for living life. I was browsing my old songs a few weeks ago and came across this and thought it would be a good candidate for a bit of a remix.

The original is on my signature link somewhere down the list if you'd like to compare.

On this.... what's new....

I removed several (4) complete tracks. Reworked instrument envelopes and levels. I dropped most of them out. Played with the vocal levels towards the end. Made the harmonies beefier. A fancy musical term for "made them louder"

The band is:

Steel 363, Fiddle 624, Piano 1725 & 2045, Bass 366, Nashville even drums.

Everything else is me.

Vocals, 5 tracks.
Guitars, two Taylor acoustic guitars, and one Mandolin track.

FLY (the remix)

Lyrics:

FLY

I watched you grow as time passed by
I look at you now and I feel pride
So many good times in the past
Created memories that last

Time rolls on and we grow old
Winter's coming so's the cold
So spend your time out in the sun
Live, love, laugh and have some fun

Go on baby and fly,
Spread your wings reach for the sky
Don't ever be afraid to fall,
God's still big, when you feel small
Grab life fast and hold on tight
Love all the people in your life.
Tell the truth and never lie
Now Go on baby and fly.

You'll start a family of your own
Help them learn and watch them grow
As this world keeps turning round.
Trust in God for solid ground

Some day then you too will know
The blessings found in growing old
And as your young ones walk away,
Hold them close to you and say

Go on baby and fly,
Spread your wings reach for the sky
Don't ever be afraid to fall,
God's still big when you feel small
Grab life fast and hold on tight
Love all the people in your life.
Tell the truth and never lie
Now Go on baby and fly.

Love all the people in your life...
Go on baby and fly

Very nice Herb. Great old country sound to it and the feelings imparted by the words are superb. Great song, great writing.

This tune was certainly work re-visiting! I feel you did it justice with the updated treatment! This is a wonderful sounding country tune! What a great message! Vocals are perfect and you did a great job getting a good sound with those acoustic tracks! Mandolin is the icing on the cake!

Thanks, Torrey

Mario, Misha, Brad, and Torry. I just wanted to say .... Thanks for listening and commenting.

The original wasn't all that bad but I could see where it could be improved a bit and that mostly involved removing things. Too often, we add and use things just because we can and often that is the wrong way to go.

Again thanks

Herb,

This sounds great! Of course I heard it "live" yesterday in the studio but it sounds great again.

Your voice sounds exactly like Willie Nelson on this man.

Really incredible job!

Really good country song Herb!
We especially like the chorus.

And the daughters... have they spread their wings yet?

David.... Thanks man. I had a blast with the project we're working on.

Rob and Anne.... Yes. My youngest is an occupational therapist, and my oldest daughter has just finished her doctorate and is in New Orleans working at a museum.

A really solid effort.
My only nit is that the vocal reverb, good as it is, seems a little different to the band reverb OR it could be room sound from the tracking which placed the two in different sized rooms.

Cheers

Herb:

Well, never heard the original—so have no basis to compare the mixes—but I’m pretty sure this version would win out hands down . . . because it’s pretty darn perfect. A wonderful write and message, stellar vocal, with a warm and pretty music bed. Nice touches on the production throughout—love that mandolin. Just a lovely tune, beautifully arranged and executed. Simply an outstanding piece of work.

My very humble regards,

Deej

Absolutely brilliant fatherly advice, Herb, and, man, what a wonderful song to present it. Yes, Willie Nelson for sure, your vocal is perfect. Such a good write, Herb.

Enjoy whatever happens!

“Grab life fast and hold on tight
Love all the people in your life.”

That’s excellent advice for all of us.

This is heartwarming in lyric and performance, Herb. Your daughters have a lovely keepsake from their Daddy in this.

We love the country band and your mandolin, as others have mentioned, is very nice.

We listened to the original version again and we like both but do agree with you on the “less is more” remix. smile

Enjoyed it,

J&B

Wow... let me catch up a bit. I've been working on a new tune and busy around here....

Rayc... you might be right, I will have to listen closely to see what I did.... and look into the project.

Ember.... Thanks.... a lot of tears and memories went into the original write and recording.

Andi... much appreciated, the kind words.

Deej56.... the original can be found on my signature link.... my music.... down the page a bit.

PeterF.... thank you for listening and taking the time to reply

Babu.... part of the lyrics came from a poster that my daughters had in their room... Live, Love Laugh. Thanks

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
