I am looking for some advice here. I am from the days when the only choices you had for guitar were reverb, tremolo, fuzz and wah. There are so many effects in My POD software I don't know where to begin. For example, if I hear a sound I want to replicate, where do I even begin? Is there anything online that shows if you use this effect here is how it will, sound? I imagine after lots of experience someone can hear an effect and say oh yeah, here is the combo of effects to use to get that sound. Any advice appreciated! Bernie

Line 6 forum has a forum called +++ Tone Templates +++. It offers setting templates based on the sound of certain artists. Another Line 6 resource is the +++ Multi-Effect Units +++ forum. It has different sub sections for all the different pods released over the years. I've been a member of the Line 6 Variax forum section longer than I've been a member of this forum. Yamaha bought Line 6 a few years ago and has taken the product lines more mainstream than Line 6 originally was.

Good luck.....
If there's a tone you hear and like, find out the guitar, pickups, amp, and the fx used and the chain order. All these things matter.
I've never been a guitarist to use an fx pedal board. For years my only effect was the cord to the guitar and amp. Now days I still stick mainly to that setup. However, I have picked up a simple gain pedal (the Joyo Ultimate Drive) to add a bit of front end gain to the signal. Reverb is in the guitar amp. The Joyo is a mild gain preamp kind of thing.
Occasionally, I will add some fx from the fx in my DAW. slap-back echo, flange, or phasing, and rarely anything other than that.
Yeah, the more you play the easier it becomes to hear something and figure it out, or at least get close.
People who use pedals love them. However, you can certainly have a lot of money invested in pedals.....another option is to get a modeling amp with fx built in.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Thanks for the advice! I don't play live, only record with Power Tracks, so I don't really need pedals except wah, which I have. I just became overwhelmed because there is SO much gear out there and I have no idea what most of it does! Thanks again! Bernie

rough rule of thumb i was always taught was that you get the guitar sound right before you record but that time based fx like reverb, chorus, flange and phase etc are best put on 'on the desk' as we used to say but now i suppose that means in the DAW
so tone, distortion or drive and speaker emulation (and wah of course) are the elements you use in the POD (and maybe compression)
hank marvin had a strat, a vox ac30 and a watkins copycat and i guarantee that whatever fx you use you will never sound exactly like hank
weird i know from bits of steel wire vibrating in a magnetic field but its the guitarist that makes the sound
most classic guitar sounds are quite simple - where the POD excels is the amp simulations and speaker cabinet options.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
