I think some improvement could be done here, but there is a solution as Mario said. The question is how convenient that solution is for you.
We are in agreement it would be a mistake to produce multiple music-minus-one tracks in every combination someone might conceivably want.
I prefer to audition possible styles using a specific song and chords (after all, that's what I will be using the style for), so I use the option Play Using Current Chordsheet for Song.
The only annoyance is that the 'picker' window retains focus and has to be closed. I could see reworking the process so it would be easier (fewer keystrokes) to audition a style on my choice of song.
But even if you want to load the demos, you just have to close the picker window then mute the appropriate tracks. And of course, one person's preference here might be unique.
This is the Wishlist forum, so if the wish is to improve the audition process, then +1.
BIAB 2024 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 6.5 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6; Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus Studio 192, Presonus Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors
Mute is time consuming. I just want to quickly listen to a style in the picker and move on. I don’t want to spend the muting then going back to the picker.
Here are the steps to set Mutes once, and audition Styles consecutively from the StylePicker Window:
This is a workflow solution that by making small adjustments in workflow of the scenario detailed in the original post to listen only to the Rhythm Section (Bass & Drums).
BIAB, in most cases, already can do this as long as the StylePicker is properly set up to filter and the genre styles follow the normal track sequence of the Bass being on the Bass Track and the Drums on the Drums Track.
In a test, I completed filters to limit the search results to the genre and settings for a particular style song. The search results were 454 possible styles.
I muted all but the Bass Track and Drums Track and did a quick view of the StylePicker Mixer and stepped through the first 105 style in the list and each of the 105 RealStyles did in fact have a Bass on the Bass Track and Drums on the Drum Tracks.
But... the StylePicker has to be told the user wants to audition only the unmuted tracks and not the complete style. Otherwise, by selecting to audition the Style Demo, even with the tracks muted, auditioning the demo will play the stereo demo and all of the tracks will play. You're hearing the demo at this point and not the StylePicker Mixer.
Additional steps must be entered to have the StylePicker Mixer play rather than the Style Demo. So, as Matt suggested, audition possible styles using a specific song and chords That's what a user will be using the style for. Use the option Play Using Current Chordsheet for Song.
An entire Chord Chart does not have to be input. Nor is the 4 bar preview ideal. The most efficient method I've found is to enter 4 bars with PartMarker a and repeat the same progression for 4 bars of PartMarker b and to set Bars 1-8 to repeat twice.
This results in the Bass and Drums will play the current Chord Chart in the highlighted Style but only playing the unmuted Bass and Drums Tracks.
Mute is time consuming. I just want to quickly listen to a style in the picker and move on. I don’t want to spend the muting then going back to the picker.
I just discovered that there are mute buttons in the style picker. Plus those tracks stay muted for the entire session so say you only want the bass and drums every time you change styles only the bass and drums will play, if of course they are on the same track number.
Note that the style must be playing your chord progression, this will not work on the demos.
Also note that is an alt number that can mute said tracks however that does not work here. Maybe others can verify?
1-click on the small square after the track name 2-click on track settings 3-click on mute
PS - I see that Charlie and I were typing at the same time!

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware
Just mute everything but first and third track (that should give you "B&D" for most tracks. Check "4 bar preview" Use "green" play button to preview (double clicking on he style will just play the demo) So do a single click on the style->green play button should do what you want.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
