Just about to put it in the dumpster. All the computers I built survived the move without issue.

I had been using this Dell to run the CNC mill.

I assume motherboard failure.

Comments?

Billy

Need more info..... Is it displaying the normal Dell BIOS splash screen? Which function keys have you tried if it does?

Hi Steve

F2, F12

It will not display the BIOS when hard drive is disconnected. It shows hard drive is missing but keyboard will not work. Tried different USB keyboard ports.

It goes directly to repair and will not let me in the BIOS. I changed the battery.

The most likely issue is bad MB. The question becomes do I spend $60 on a new MB or just buy a newer refurb.

Weird the BIOS doesn't load. Sounds like MB to me too then.

>>The question becomes do I spend $60 on a new MB or just buy a newer refurb.

Depends. If that PC has enough power/specs to do what its normal purpose is, go for it. That model was first released in 2011. You can probably go less than $50 for one from my initial Google search.

If you need an upgrade anyway, just get a Dell Refurb. You should be able to get a similar new refurb for under $300.

I don't need much to run the milling machine. I also saw some cheap motherboards on eBay.

The software to run the mill is a bit complex to install. I may even need to get paid help to install it.

Just thinking out loud, I don't want to do that twice if the hard drive fails next.

I have another large backup system I could use but it seems illogical to put a high-dollar computer in that environment.

Between the move, the new house, and the hurricane I am having to spend a lot more money than I am comfortable with. Still, I am very fortunate because there are many people around me who have lost everything in the flooding.

All of this is keeping me away from things I would like to be doing. Like playing music!

Do you have a PS/2 keyboard connector on the computer? If so, can you try a PS/2 keyboard instead of the USB keyboard to get into the BIOS? Perhaps the USB port isn't immediately available at initial boot.

Hi Trev

There is a PS2 port. I have a PS2 mouse but no keyboard. I would have definitely tried that if I had one.

I found a $20 dollar MB on eBay and ordered it. Not a big investment.

I want to get all this CNC stuff up and running to be able to sell it. So the computer does not have to last forever.

Although I am supposed to be retired, being here at the ranch almost full-time, I find myself pretty involved. The aftermath of the hurricane has certainly added to the workload.

I have too many hobbies and need to reduce the complexity. I have really only been using it to cut round holes in aluminum for tube sockets for the most part. Writing Gcode is like playing piano, you need to do it every day to keep up the skills.

I have built all the guitar amps I want. My experiments in solid-state surface-mount electronics just have not been as interesting as messing around with vacuum tube stuff. So...not sure what I will do in the future with all the electronic stuff.

Moving everything I own and have collected over the years has given me a very sobering look at the inadvisability of many of my buying decisions...lol I have come to understand that I don't own all this stuff, it owns me...lol Time to lighten the load!

I do remember your music room being quite crowded!! LOL!

My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

Got the new motherboard. Installed and the OS came back up. That was a bit of a surprise.

We will see if the CNC software will work now.

Well...Joe...The music room is still wall-to-wall stuff...lol

On another note (F flat demolished) the VPN through South America is a bit slower than what I normally have.

No youtube ads.

Well Billy, I once knew of an F Flat that was a little diminished, but I'm not familiar with an F flat demolished. Sounds much more serious grin grin grin

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
