Hi,

I'm really new here and I'm just like a beginner level starting out on the digital keyboard.

I recently received a discontinued Roland Rd 700NX which my late uncle left for me. Other than able to change tone, live set and play around with the split and layering I can't seem to figure out how I would play with the rhythm. I was under the impression that such a keyboard would at least have auto accompaniment if I play a chord but instead the rhythm just "flatly" loops without any variations. I had search everywhere but can't seem to find anything related to the auto accompaniment.

Does anyone have experience with this keyboard?

Hi Fival,

Welcome to PG Music World and welcome in this forum.

Did you have a look to the product manual - surely available over the net - and check the features of this keyboard ?

Welcome to the forum from me too!

As John Luke suggested, a good place to start instrument familiarization is by looking at the product documentation. Fortunately, Roland makes all product documentation available for download in pdf format. +++ HERE +++ is the web page for the Roland RD 700NX. That web page includes the MIDI implementation Chart, Patch/Performance List and Owner's Manual.

It's also useful to look at product reviews. I did a web search for product reviews and found +++ THIS +++ from the UK magazine Sound-On-Sound, +++ customer reviews +++ from the US online store Sweetwater, +++ THIS +++ review from Keyboard magazine and +++ THIS +++ video review with poor audio from YouTube.

A quick look at everything indicates the Roland RD 700NX was a top of the line piece of road gear when released praised for the feel of it's keyboard, solid build and fantastic patches (sounds). It has about 1,000 patches altogether and some of them are GM compatible. It also has very good sounding acoustic piano patches. Unfortunately, most patches are not readily available from the front panel and are accessed in a roundabout fashion.

There are some professional keyboard players on this forum. They will likely have more first hand information to share.

Hi Fival

What you have here is a very highly thought of STAGE PIANO with some very good other voices ,
However it is not an arranger workstation with built in styles, it does have a simple drummer but that is all

Quote from revue
“The drum patterns in the RD-700NX might be usable onstage in a pinch, or for practicing, but you won’t find pattern or song sequencing. All you can do is start and stop an unvarying two-bar groove and adjust the tempo.”

I think you are thinking more of an arranger work station keyboard where you play the chord below the split point, and it churns out a full backing for the song accompaniment part and you just play right hand melody over that, like say the Yamaha Psr or Tyros or Genos range.

You can split the keyboard to play different instruments in different zones though

But this one I am afraid you have to play both hands.

Best Regards
Mike

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
