Hello All,

In the upper right-hand portion of the screen, in the mixer window, there are tabs labelled "Plugins" and "Patches".

What's the difference between the two?

Cheers,
Joel

Hi

Yes indeed they change the mixer view to show any plugins if you have any, or patches or realtracks you have on the track.
A quick ref instead of the gen mixer screen

A patch is a sound. RTs are patches as are MIDI sounds.

A plugin is an effect. EQ, reverb, compressors, limiters, etc are plugins. Plugins will affect the sound of a patch.

I hope this is what you were asking and I hope this helps.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Hello Mario,

Thank you for your message. I appreciate your help. It's clear now that "plugins" will literally be effects.

For patches and RealDrums that don't have any plugins, they each show "none, none, none, none" in their top slot. When clicking on "none" I see that a plugin can be added.

Does it matter which of the four "none" slots I select to add a plugin/effect?

Thanks again,
Joel

I don't use effects in BiaB but if I did I would start on the far left and work to the right. That is plugin #1 in the first none, plugin #2 in the second none, etc.

For MIDI tracks, the first slot can also be used for adding a VST (Virtual Studio Technology was developed originally by Steinberg). This can be a Virtual Instrument (VSTi) or a DirectX Instrument Synthesizer (DXi)

Subsequent Slots (2,3,4) can only be used to add Effects (Fx) to that instrument in the first slot.

For RealTracks (audio tracks), all slots can be used for adding Fx.

Hope this assists.

Search for 'VST/DX Synths/Plugins' in Help for some valuable reference material.

(Others, feel free to correct this if it's not quite right)

I also don't use effects in BIAB. In general, the order of plugins matters to the sound, but I don't know how BIAB orders them when there is more than one effect. In other words, you should, for example, do EQ before limiting. How does BIAB make that happen?

I'm pretty BIAB processes them in order, so the output of the first plugin becomes the input for the second one one, etc. So, it is up to the user to order them correctly. I'm pretty sure there is not intelligence in the processing of the plugins.

RealBand, on the other hand, provides additional busses where you can insert plugins (in addition to the four available track plugins) and a knob to set how much signal gets sent to that bus from the track. But I'm pretty sure that the four slots on the track and the four slots on each of the busse and the four slots on the master output get processed similarly to what BIAB does (at least the interface is pretty much the same).

Hi,

I can confirm that the signal chain in the plugins window runs top to bottom exactly as John described, in both Band-in-a-Box and RealBand.

Cheers

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
