Hi Folks.
The way that I use BIAB and my little music hobby has little to do with this request.

My son is 8. He learns to play piano. Usually it is him & his teacher and piano. His latest piece was from Faber & Faber Level 2B arrangement of Star Wars (Main Theme).

I want to make things a little bit more fun for him by making a backing track for this arrangement in BIAB that would work with Faber&Faber Star Wars arrangement, export it to mp3, so he can practice with "band" by playing along.

Can somebody please guide me where to start.... Is there SGU file for Star Wars tune that can be modified to fit Faber&Faber arrangement or everything has to be done from scratch?

Thank you,
Misha.

Hi Misha

Just my thoughts but would that not interfere with his learning to count and play notes length from the lesson sheet music arrangement.
Will he not get distracted and try to play to the backing track.
The backing track would have to be very accurately constructed not to do more harm than good and I certainly would not recommend it for learning an examination piece.
As it will not be there in the exam.
Ok for a bit of fun maybe ?? but playing to backing tracks takes skills that he may not yet have, as he is still counting in his head from the sheet.

Mike,
I fully understand, he has many pieces that he learned and learns. This is just something I want to see if he can handle and I think it might be a fun project. Also, I too want to get a little bit more familiar on how to work with arrangement for popular song(s). So, it might be an interesting experience for both of us.

Thanks.

Misha,

There are multiple ways to approach what you want to do.

Find a midi file of the arrangement and import the midi file into Band-in-a-Box. Band-in-a-Box will detect the tempo, key signature and chords. Us the detected data as the foundation for creating the Band-in-a-Box performance.

Record your son or the music teacher performing the song. Import the recording into Band-in-a-Box and use the Audio Chord Wizard to create the foundation.

Manually create the foundation by ear.

Jim, Bob

Thank you for the input! I guess it will take elbow grease to make it right.
I had these sort of idea, that MGU or SGU exists for BIAB on Star Wars theme and it would be just trimming and re-voicing.

I never done backing to a tune that was not mine, so it is kind of new territory to me smile

From reading Jim's suggestions and Bob's site, I think finding MIDI and rearranging it, is the most straight forward approach.

Misha,

You've received multiple ideas. I hope you'll share with us what ideas you tried and how they worked for you. The feedback will prove useful when people run across this thread in the future.

Hi Misha, what I would be inclined to do is put the actual piano piece in using notation. From there if you have any other details such as actual chords add them or work out the chords from the music. For example, take the left hand written music extract out a bass part, then more of the rhythm section. Then work the right hand out, maybe apply the melody to a violin or flute (whatever). You might apply strings or other instruments to other written parts. From there it is usually a fairly simple task to add backing embellishments add drums for example. By the time you’ve finished the only thing missing is the piano parts as you’ve pinched all the bits and given them to other instruments. Everything is then based on what he is learning so the timing tempo etc should be ok to play along with.

My thoughts I have done similar for fun on a number of occasions. What started out as a simple piano piece ends up filled out with strings, drums, bass and other instruments resulting in a far greater thing. It usually does not take all that long to do.

Misha, this is from a school band director’s point of view. I taught elementary and middle school music for 37 years. During the later years of teaching, beginning maybe 20 years ago, most band method books had an option to purchase background CD’s (or tapes) for use home practice. This sounds like what you are attempting to do. At the time I thought the main drawback was the time they might take to find the location of the correct background tracks. This was before digitally available music so this problem my no longer exist.

Tony,
Nice read! Thank you for explaining the process!

Jazzsax,
Thank you for input! Never thought about going that route. My son's piano teacher is not too tech savvy. I wonder if there are piano books with arrangements focused on Children that will have their midi (not audio CDs or mixed things) counter-parts available. That will surely solve this the easiest way. Then it is all about re voicing and introducing real tracks, tempo etc in BIAB.

If anybody is familiar with such Sheet music books + midi for
children, please share.

Thank you,
Misha.

Update.
Took jazzsax advice and bought Faber&Faber CD with corresponding MIDI arrangement to printed sheet music of theirs. Should be fairly simple to re-voice instruments in BIAB and replace a thing or two with RT / RD to sound great. Strange thing is they do not have downloadable version... Well that is very minor smile

Mostly, my son mostly using Faber&Faber books. If somebody can recommend something equally good or better that will have corresponding MIDI arrangements, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Misha.

There's always the ACW... wizard that you can try. No guarantee that it will do the job or even get close enough. I've had widely varying results using the ACW.

If you have a midi arrangement. it's not hard to import it or even enter it manually. The big question is regarding the style. The style is critical to having it sound right.

regarding playing by sight or ear..... both are useful and should be encouraged from the early years.

Guitarhacker,

Thanks! I think using Faber&Faber own midi arrangement and replacing couple of things with real tracks is the path of least resistance. It is a shame Faber&Faber does not have individual Midi arrangements for their sheet music for sale, only CD's that correspond to particular book, but they are not expensive and it is possible to find them used. I ordered one CD yesterday. Will report here after I get it and try to tinker with MIDI in BIAB.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
