I disagree with their reasoning but not their premise.
Will people strive to create shorter songs once they realize they can earn more money with less song length? Certainly. Back in the days when AM radio ruled the roost, the goal was to create a song that was 3 minutes or less. The rise of FM radio, college radio stations and album orientated rock lengthened the music timeline. Disco and dance music lengthened the timeline more.
A shorter music timeline is actually more traditional.

I think there's always going to be people who create a variety of lengths for their music. I haven't noticed songs getting any shorted to be honest. I feel like songs have stayed pretty varying in length.

I know for myself, I many times write Chorus Verse 1 Verse 2 Bridge Pre-Chorus Chorus Most of my music is 29.75ish seconds.  I even get a fair amount of airplay every single day.

It is not only streaming that has changed things. Live gigs have also changed. Back years ago when playing in pubs and clubs we would do sets of between 20 - 30 minutes. Then have a 5 - 10 minute break (enough time for folks to get a drink) then back on again. These days 90 minutes or more in a set is not uncommon. (Publicans are booking people less as it does not really increase bar sales).
Sorry if I changed the topic but the length of music both in terms of songs and also sets is often changing to meet a new climate.

This is an interesting topic - I've noticed the shorter song lengths, but only in particular genres. It seems like hip hop in particular is getting shorter and shorter. One of my favourite hip hop albums from last year was 15 songs long but only had a playtime of 24 minutes. Only 2 of the 15 songs exceeded 2 minutes in length.
I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, and I wouldn't necessarily attribute it to streaming. I just think attention spans are shorter than they used to be. And in certain genres you don't really need a tune to be long anyway. In my mind, if you can convey as much emotion or musicality in 2 minutes as you can in 5, you've done your job as a music creator. Similarly, if you try to stretch out a somewhat repetitive tune from 2 minutes to 5 minutes, it really won't add anything.
Plus, there's always been songs in the mainstream that are short. I just think it's in a higher abundance these days.
To counter the statement, when it comes to a lot of rock bands (primarily alternative rock or experimental rock bands) the songs are actually getting longer and longer. Both Tame Impala and King Gizzard are modern rock bands whose discographies mainly consist of 5+ minute long songs.
Similarly, my favourite album last year was by a band called Daughters, and many of the songs exceeded 5 minutes in length.
And in another example, 'To Be Kind' by Swans is one of my favourite albums of the last 20 years. It came out in 2014, and it's only 10 tracks long but has a run time of nearly TWO HOURS. When I listen to it, I never once feel it is too long though.
