Hi all

I am still having problems with midi drums, with my Yamaha xg lite
VSTi Yamaha SGP2 (S-YXG2006LE) VST in the BIAB
Mixer, build 2021 827.
The problem only occurs on the drum track, mixer track 3 ch10 where it does not play drums but plays the equivalent voice patch (it should play the matching drum set)

However if I open a midi multi channel file in the melody track it plays drums normally for any note data on ch 10 as per normal midi practice.
I might say that the same VSTi works fine in realband and other software.

This VSTi worked fine on BIAB 2019.

SO FOR SOME REASON mixer track 3 ch 10 drums does not honour mid ch 10 convention on this 2021 version of the mixer.

Even stranger if I use the coyote wave table vst it works fine on mixer track3 ch10
And resolves to the expected drum set!!!

Perplexed
Mike

Mike,

I believe the drum instrument patch notes in XG are one octave off from drum instrument patch notes used in many other VSTi.

Do you mind transposing track 3 +12 and/or -12 to see if that makes a difference?
GM and XG are one number off with patch numbers. Can't remember which but the GM or XG patch list starts with 0 and the other starts with 1 so all the patch numbers are off by 1 from each other but with the same names. Under Options>GM Settings>Send MIDI Messages select Send XG Mode On Startup. That should fix the problem. I'm not at my music computer so I may have missed a step but it's there.

Hi thanks for your replies guys,
Jim
No that is not the case

If you use the basic midi set bank from xg they have a msb and lsb of 000 000 respectively
And are fully midi compliant.

Bob
Yes I am aware of the one number shift that Yamaha uses for its patches
I did try the setting for sending xg mode at start up but it did not do the trick.
I normally have a XGlite pat file loaded that takes care of that.
Anyway the vst works fine in realband and also in BIAB if you import a multi ch midi file into the melody track this will play drums with any data on ch10 as per normal.
The problem is playing the style drum track, track 3 ch 10 it does not play drums it plays the equivalent instrument patch there fore for drum set 1 standard kit you get a piano, so the fact that the data is on ch10 it is not playing drum sets as normal midi practise.
It’s got me beat worked fine for years, it seem to be since I upgraded from 2019 to 2021. but then there seems to have been a lot of midi problems with the new mixer.

Thanks Mike
Hi again

Ok one more clue.
If I start BIAB from cold with an all midi style selected and the vst, when I press play the fist beat of the count in just one beat, plays the normal side stick, all following count in beats and drums play the equivalent instrument patch, so piano in stead of standard kit, bass instead of jazz kit etc.

As I said earlier the coyote wave table works fine and plays drums as normal.

Stumped Mike
Hi frown confused

Well no luck here then.

If anyone wants to see the offending XGlite Vsti, it is downloadable + my BIAB PAT file from my web site below.
Even without the Pat file it will use GM patches.
You will find it on my Freebies page scroll down towards the bottom.
I linked to this some years ago on this forum and it has been downloaded and used many times with no problems.
Worked fine in the BIAB 2019 build never had 2020
Hopefully Andrew and co. will have a look.
Mike
Gee Mike, I wish I could help, but you are the guy I go to when I have problems like this. crazy
Hmmm.

And some fell on stony ground, oh dear.

Something I am sure some one will Know is what are the 2 other files to try deleting from biab when return to factory does not do the job. Apart from
Intrface.bbw or does factory settings do them all anyway?

Thanks Mike

Usually the intrface.bbw and MySetup.DK would suffice. They're found in the bb/preferences folder. We have more info on what settings the other preferences files contain here: https://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq62.htm#93
Hi thanks Chantelle

The link is very useful, thank you.
Still struggling with my problem though.

Mike
It should be noted that a number of inaccuracies are found in FAQ #93 for resetting to Factory Defaults.

Other members have explored and noted that this FAQ is out of date, so your results may not be as expected.

Downloaded your VST and XGLite.pat and it works fine for me, but not with GM patches - the VST itself seems to require XG patches to select drums, despite sending patches to channel 10 (I think this is because BB sends bank 0 and banklsb 0 messages on play). Please make sure when selecting the patch that you click on the Send Patch button as I've highlighted below:

Mike,
The issue is that the XGLite plugin switches from drums to a melodic instrument on the drums channel (10).

This happens if any bank change is sent on the drum channel.
Styles typically send bank 0 on all used channels to insure the correct patch is chosen.

Do you know why XGLite does that?

We previously put an option to never send drum bank changes (on channel 10) to fix the same issue with hardware XG.

So we can have the same option apply to plugins, and that would fix it, but it seems incorrect behavior for a GM synth plugin to not play drums on channel 10 if it has received a bank change event of 0, which is the default bank. The next patch release will have that, and should work for the XGLite (32 bit plugin). As long as Prefs-MIDI Options-Drum Bank Changes is "disabled" (the default is "disabled") . And Prefs-MIDI Channels- Drums should have banks set to 0, though this likely doesn't matter.
Hi Peter and all,

Ok thanks so much the new build.
This has resolved the issue by installing the new update that you sent me.
Great to be back on track.
Mike
You're very welcome Mike, glad to be of service!
