Hi PGM, et. al., Merging two or more mono tracks results in a stereo track (at least as indicated by the icon). Shouldn't merged mono sources remain as a mono track? Thanks!

What exact steps are you using?
Are you merging multiple MONO tracks to another track in RB? Or?
