A great shame. John, he lived across the river from me, outside of Woodstock NY, and was quite a celebrity. Woodstock is full of musical greats; I play there occasionally and run into some amazing folks.
Trivia: For anyone not familiar, Woodstock (the village loaded with musicians) is an hour and an half away from the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival in Bethel Woods, NY.
I once played a PDQ Bach record for my 7th grade General Music class. They didn’t get the joke, nor the sophistication of his work. But I was on the floor.
It didn't say exactly what did him in (a series of infections), so I guess it wasn't Pretty Darn Quick.
I thought he was very clever.
He was brilliant. And laughter being the best medicine, he got all the way to 88. I'd take 88 in a heartbeat. A 4/4 heartbeat, of course.
