Has anybody else ever wondered why Labor Day is a day off from our labor?

Is Labor Day worldwide? I think Canada celebrates Labour Day. How about the Brits and Aussies weighing in here? Is the first Monday in September a holiday in Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland.....?
