a intro to music production user posted an observation the the major daws emulate the past with their knobs faders and tracks and they wondered if a re-imagining of the daw is needed given we're working digitally now and touch seems to be catching on

they sighted these two examples

i would also add biab and ableton's session view

what do you think

I deal with it on my smart phone and my iPad; however, nothing drives me nuttier than to see greasy fingerprint streaks across my monitor screen. Please don't touch my monitor screen or my TV screen.

When they fix that problem, I'll embrace touch technology on fixed-location screens (that you can't angle away to see through the streaks like you can with a phone or pad). Rather than touch, maybe what we need are "proximity" screens, where you just have to get close, but don't have to actually touch. Windows 13 maybe?

Just my opinion.

The DAW I use regularly has no mixer view. It drives some people batty not seeing a fake mixer on the screen.

I can deal with fingerprints. Imagine if you had this puppy at your disposal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HHiXqcyu2M

What I don't like is GUI knob functions where sliders are more easy to execute with mouse movement. Some actually make you try to make little circles with a mouse - when dragging in any line is way easier.

I'll take one of those Raven things, if you let me have one. I can buy windex.

I use cakewalk Sonar. The console (mixer) view is optional and you can get a mix done from the track view.

Both those software's pghboemike references remind me in some ways of ableton and reaktor, both of which have always intimidated me.

I grew up with analog mixers and I like using mixers because I think that way. I would welcome a new, modular view in Sonar that lets you mangle sound in different ways.

Peace,

Ian

Another DAW that allows touchscreen use is "MultiTrack Studio" by Bremmers Audio Design.

MIDI surface control capability is more common at this point in time. I was playing with my wife's Android tablet a few days ago and found several free Android apps that perform surface control functions.

I've been wanting to try the PG Music app but my wife won't let me download it to her tablet! I think she thinks I'll steal the tablet from her!
