I have a Behringer MDX 2100 "Composer" dual-channel compressor which dates back to the mid-90s. It seems noisy, even by early Behringer standards. I mean, REALLY noisy. There are no published noise specs; the online manual is even pre-PDF. Who can tell me whether it is my technique or the unit itself?

The hope had been to use it for PA and recording use, but as noisy as it is, I hesitate even to use it on bass guitar.

The lack of a published spec for noise may just say it all, R.

If you have the Gain Staging correct and still hear hiss noise, then the unit is too noisy to use.

Correct Gain Staging is to always have the Output or Master volume set LOWER than the ones before it. Get any gain at the preceding controls and just barely crack the output until you get the needed level, then check for noise.

If it hisses then, it is a noisy piece of gear. Toss it.
