My dad was a huge fan of big band music and I heard a lot of it when I was young. Benny Goodman was always my favorite, wanted to play clarinet when I was a kid because of him (got stuck playing tuba in the school band instead, but that's another story :P)

And of course later on Charlie Christian joined that band, probably one of the most important (and underrated) guitarists ever.

The band had several versions of this song - some done for movies and some in concert, and one on the record. They would improvise freely, and add anything that clicked to the arrangement.

Those guys could play.

We love Krupa, Benny and Hampton. Amazing musicians.

That 1930’s live at Carnegie hall still blows me away. Recorded by sending the mics via phone to a disc wax machine and you can hear every thing in the drum kit and even Hampton quietly scatting.

Rock on indeed.
