I finally have a BIAB file for this that I like,
but can someone tell me if there were ever any English lyrics for it?

I struck out on Google and when I put the original lyrics into their translator,
it just made a hilarious mess.

If there never was an English version, can anyone tell me what the "meaning" is, of the original lyrics?

Thanks!

Hi Lloyd,
Below is a translation - I don't know how accurate it is.The translation doesn't seem to fit the melody.
Oh, and it no longer rhymes. cry

Liechtensteiner Polka
Will Glahé

polka my darling!
polka mein schatz!

pol-ka my darling!
pol-ka mein schatz!

there, no love-stone remains in his place!
da, bleibt doch kein liech-ten-stei-ner auf sei-nem platz!

in my place my darling!
auf sei-nem platz mein schatz!

you can shoot, shoot, shoot-in-your-eyes.
man kann beim schie-ben, schie-ben, schie-bensich in bei-de au-gen sch'n.

you have to love, love, love, and love, that's all!
man muu sich lie-ben, lie-ben, lie-ben, und die lie-be, die est schon!

oh yes, such a love-stéminner pol-ka has it;
oh ja, so ei-ne liech-ten-stei-ner pol-ka die hat's;

that makes rabatz, my darling!
die macht rabatz, mein schatz!

the old gentleman of liechtensteiner, yes!
der alte herr von liechtensteiner, ja!

Yes!
ja!

Yes!
ja!

that could not be al-lei-ne, no!
der konn-te-nicht-al-lei-ne sein, nein!

No!
nein!

No!
nein!

he-send-te-ne offered, yes!
er-schick-te sei-ne boten aus, ja!

Yes!
ja!

Yes!
ja!

look for me-si-kan-th and send me to my house!
schaut mir nach mu-si-kan-ten ausund schickt sic mir in's haus!

the mu-sik-lay-te, because wub-th small and coarse: yes, that is the Liechen-stei-ner pol-ka my darling!
die mu-sik-leg-te los, da wub-ten klein und grob: ja, das ist die liech-ten-stei-ner pol-ka mein schatz!

polka my darling!
polka mein schatz!

pol-ka my darling!
pol-ka mein schatz!

Thanks Keith.
That's about what I got.
I'm hoping that someone who speaks the language can at least
provide a synopsis of the story line!

Lloyd, I have a friend, a professional musician, who has played German music full time for over 40 years. He's in Japan at the moment (doing Oktoberfest) but I'll get in touch with him and ask if he knows if there are English words to the song. He will be sure to know one way or the other.

Give me a couple of days.

I just heard back from my friend; he isn't aware of any English lyrics for the song, but he's playing with some other German musos tonight, so he's going to ask around.

I’m just about to get dressed to go Up to our Village Oktober Fest function. If I remember I’ll ask about. We have several people about the place that might know about this. (one chap comes up with all sorts of polka type songs.)

The couple of blokes I spoke to have the song in a German but no English translation they could easily think of.

This probably doesn't help, but when we play O-Fest parties, we simply do it as an instrumental.

Thanks all, for your help!
If no one comes up with English lyrics, I too will use it as an instrumental.

Hi Lloyd,
Well the consensus of the German musicians seems to be that there are no equivalent English lyrics for the song.
So it looks like an instrumental.

Or you could make up some words ……….

"I'm Lloyd, (boom boom) I play the Liechtensteiner Polka so fine,
How can you tell,I'm not from the Rhine?
So (boom boom) lets have a schnapps and a beer,
"Prosit! my dear, let's dance.

(Seriously tongue in cheek)

Great start on a song Keith!

I ended up using a MIDI file, pulling it into BIAB, fixing up the chords,
and adding the German words in the bar-based lyrics layer.
I'll now create a BIAB video of it and add it to my Super Song Selector
on my laptop, to have on hand should we want to play it.

Thanks!

Perhaps you can substitute the words from +++ Cow Pasture Polka +++ eek

Quote:
COW PASTURE POLKA
(Frank DeVol)

Jerry Colonna & His San Fernando Valley Pals - 1947

Down in the pasture, back of the corral
We'll dance the Polka, each cowboy and his gal
Down in the pasture, where the cattle graze
We'll dance the Cow Pasture Polka

Lift your feet, lift your feet, lift your feet
Be careful where you put them down
Put them down, put them down, put them down
Be sure you put them on the ground

Watch your step, watch your step, watch your step
When you swing your partner round and round
And don't have too much to nip, or maybe you will slip
Doin' the Cow Pasture Polka

(Moo - Moo - Moo) That's the heffer harmony
(Moo - Moo - Moo) Even though they're out of key
(Moo - Moo - Moo) There's a tune that's sweet to me
They say a cowslip grew on the spot I fell for you
Doin' the Cow Pasture Polka

(Instrumental Break)

(Moo - Moo - Moo) That's the heffer harmony
(Moo - Moo - Moo) Even though they're out of key
(Moo - Moo - Moo) There's a tune that's sweet to me
Don't spin around so fast or you'll fall flat on the grass
Doin' the Cow Pasture Polka

Doin' the Cow Pasture Polka

Then there is the +++ Gary Kuchenbecker +++ version released in 1993

Jim:

Catchy little tune but I couldn't get it to fit with Liechtensteiner.
Thanks!

LLoyd, We had great success playing In Heaven There is no Beer polka style. We even had singalongs with it.
