This song is about the mistakes we make in life and the ones we sometimes hurt.
The lyrics are narrated from the point of view of a Nurse as she watches an elderly man residing in a retirement home as he contemplates his life.

An Old Man Cries

Looking out the window, he sits alone in his chair
His old hands are shaking, all alone in despair
Still, thinks of all the chances that he let slip by
And it's not hard to notice a tear well in his eyes

Oh, it's so hard, and I don't know why
Seems beyond all reason to watch an old man cry

Bridge

Those many years wasted had no time to give
I guess there's still tomorrow, but short time to live
Heartwarming embraces from those that care
So let this be a warning, love's not so hard to share

Oh, it's so hard, and I don't know why
Seems beyond all reason to watch an old man cry

Rob,
Sad and beautiful song. Deep. Fantastic emotional vocals. Meaningful lyrics. Musical bed and mix is ACE!
Good one. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.
Lovely Rob. That very 1st syllable needs a slight level boost.
The hmmm mmms are really good.
You've a fabulously expressive voice.
Sad and touching story told well with few words. Emotional and dark vocal carries nicely those images like a vivid video. Could be an excellent soundtrack song. Good band and solid mix.

Janne
I like the song and it sure has an emotional sounding vocal - it gives the song a nice reflective tone. I thought the mix was really good. There were a couple of abrupt sounding stops, like at the intro at 0:06 and coming out of the chorus at about 1:29. I'm sure it's just a personal style thing, but my ears were expecting the bass to keep ringing, or perhaps a strum on the acoustic to get the effect without the abruptness. Like I said though, just a style thing. Good song Rob,

Brad
Very sad, emotional song.
Great production with a very tasteful choice of instruments, and you have THE perfect voice to convey these emotions.
Very well done smile

Nothing to say that hasn't been said.

Good write of a sad song - well sung, nice backing and mix. Mandolin adds to the poignancy.
Very emotional lyric Rob. Makes one wonder what lies in store. Well done
Everything I wanted to say already has been said!

So all I'll add is this is an outstanding song!

IMHO your best to date.
Hi, Ray thank you for your kind words.

Sad and beautiful, as Misha said. We’ve both spent many hours visiting family and friends in nursing homes and it was heartbreaking to see the people who seemed to be all alone.

Your vocal and the band deliver this poignancy very well, Rob.

Well done,

J&B
Rob,

Lovely, sad and haunting . . . both the write and the arrangement. Your vocal works just perfectly with this tune . . . lots of emotion and nuance. Like that instrumental break for the bridge . . . nice production touch. Great mix! Even better tune—well done!

All my best,

Deej

Thank you Janne.

A lot said with just a few words. Indeed, sometimes less is more.
And your voice is perfect for a story like this.
Well done!
Thank you Scott
