This song came about after a brief chat with Marty, when I told him a story about my mother.
He suggested it for a song, so here it is.

V1
Just 5 foot two.
Permed up hair.
Not afraid of no one.
Didn't have a care.
Held her counsel.
Behind them blue eyes
Weighed up the options.
Dug out the lies.
Ch.1
She's my teacher.
and my preacher.
Quite a fighter.
There's no one like her.
She was a oner
A bella donna. That's my Mama
V2
Walked me to school
when I was 12 years old.
Wrapped me up in wool
so I wouldn't catch a cold.
Cooking and a cleaning
and scrubbing our clothes.
Where she got the energy
the lord only knows
Ch.1
Inst.
V3
Sitting in a bar
in the nicer part of town.
A girl gave me the eye
to put her beau down.
He's getting cranky
and jumps upon my back.
Mama swings her handbag,
Smackety Smack.
Ch.2
He was a goner,
there no longer.
She was a fighter.
No one like her.
She's a oner
A Bella donna. That's my Mama
Br.
She always said one day I'd look after myself.
But those blue eyes follow me
from her picture on my shelf.
She's my teacher.
and my preacher.
She's a winner.
Chicken dinner
She's a oner
A bella donna. That's my Mama
Hi Vic
Great idea to write a song about your mother
A very good text
And musically and vocally very nicely realized
Cheers to our mothers
Many greetings
Andi ;-)
Vic...super song about your mama...love the fiddle, mandolin and the rest of the band...great tribute!
Beautiful homage to your mom, I have MANY images in my head now!
"Smackety Smack" Well done!
Vic,
That's a very nice song - great tribute to your mother. Good vocal and good mix.
Bob
Fun tune, and (as others have said), a great homage to your Mum. She would have been proud - well done.
Nice work memorializing your mother.
The vocal seems just a little loud/detached from the backing and there are a few strident/sibilant things that pop out here'n'there that could be controlled if you've a mind to.
Nothing that's a deal breaker though.
Nice work.
Thank you Firesong.
I wonder if she's listening.
Vic
Vic,
A good Mama song. A good write.
"She was a oner
A bella donna.
That's my Mama"
Excellent soft-rhymes.
Good BAND.
Mix is balanced. The vocal stands out. I might tuck-it-in just a tad.
The song stayed in my head for some time after listening. That's a good sign...
fj
Thank you B.D.
May those images linger a while.
Vic
Thank you Musician17.
She probably would have been embarrassed too.
Vic
Thanks Ray.
I hope I have corrected some of those issues now.
Vic
Thanks Floyd.
I have turned down the vocal a little now.
Get that ear worm!
Vic
A great tribute to your mama!
Super groove and instrumentation.
Great vocal and mix.
I really liked this one.
Oh, man, this is such fun, Vic. I saw and heard this several times but wasn't home to comment. I love the chorus, and you know I love your vocals and lyrics. The lyrics in this one are just perfect, and I like the twist toward the end. Perfect band, and you made us all love your mom. Cool twist of Bella donna. Now, let's see... what else can we suggest you write about?
Thanks Mario.
I like that you like it.
Vic
Thanks for the sugg, Marty and thanks for the comments.
Personal stuff is awkward to write about but I enjoyed the ride.
Vic
Good job. I like the song. My momma.... she was very similar..... fearless in anyones face.
Thanks Guitarhacker.
Yes, she even scared me a few times.
Vic
Vic,
Sweet tribute. Fun rhymes & well performed. I could understand most of lyrics without looking, but I think vocals can be slightly more upfront. Thank you for sharing.
Misha.
Lovely tribute to your mom, Vic. Strong write, I especially liked the chorus. Cool vocal as always.
Good one, enjoyed!
Hi Misha.
Thank you. Glad you like it.
I'm torn between to camps. Those who say the vocal is too loud and those who think it's too soft.
I'm like "piggy in in the middle".
I suppose as long as 50% are in favour I'm ok.
Vic
Thanks Dave.
Just a few memories of growing up.
Vic
Wonderful tribute to your mama.
That's one heck of a chorus. Well done lyrics!
Nice write, fun listen, catchy. Love the mandolin.
Can't ask for much from a song!
Vic - that’s my Mama
That’s a delightful song, Vic. It had both of us reminiscing about our Mama’s and the similarity in the character of that generation. Weren’t we lucky?!
Everything sounds good!
J&B
Thank you Scott.
Yes, the chorus took some thought.
Vic
Thank you David.
The mandolin is a handy bit of kit.
Vic
Thank you J&B.
We were lucky compared to some.
Vic
There have been many songs about fathers on this forum, so it's very welcome hear about a mother for a change. Mothers work hard for us, even though we don't always notice or appreciate it enough, glad that you do. Nice band also, great upbeat groove, mandolin and fiddle work very well together. Catchy melody. And I always enjoy your strong vocal.
Janne
Hi Janne.
You’re right. Daughters tend to praise their mothers openly. Maybe sons think it to be unmanly.
Thank you for listening.
Vic
Hi Vircan,
Well-written lyrics allow us to put images on the text. A mother is a precious possession. The orchestration is pleasant. I appreciated.
Derochette
Thank you Derochette.
Like many things in life, we understand them more when they're gone.
Vic
Cool country tune Vic. Love the groove to the song. Super vocal and lyric. Excellent backtrack and production. Well done
Lovely tribute, Vic and a great country sound.
Regards,
Leon
Cheers Scott.
Thank you for that.
Vic
Thanks Leon.
I need a bit of country now and then.
Vic
Hey Vic,
What a great song!
Love the way you captured her essence.
Just delightful.
Great job man.
Vic,
Catchy chorus here . . . real nice vocal—warm—and I like those BGVs in the chorus. Production sounds all good to me. Like that mandolin and fiddle instrumental . . . and the slow down/stop in the bridge is a nice touch. Sweet tune!
Hope all is good with you,
Deej
Hi Vic,
I remember you also had a song about your dad, or am I mistaken?
This song is dealing with a very nice topic. Don't we all want to write a song about our mom?
The way you do it is just wonderful. Very nice lyrics, catchy song (as Deej said) and very nice vocals!
I enjoyed it a lot,
Hans
Hi David.
Thank you for those kind words.
Vic
Hi Deej.
Glad to see you're still around and writing.
Your comments are, as always encouraging and welcoming.
Thank you.
Vic
Hullo Hans.
I don’t remember writing a song about my dad. Maybe I should.
He had a short life.
I wrote a song about my great uncle who emigrated to Pennsylvania. Maybe that’s the song you’re thinking of.
Anyway, thank you for the appreciation.
Vic
