It's been a while since I've posted something new! This original song is really about 15 years old. I wrote and recorded it on 4-track cassette, back in the day. Biab was around back then, but it was only some odd midi program on my then GF's Mac and I uh...didn't care much for it! LOL! All these years later and I revisited this track using biab after all! I wanted to freshen it up, change the curtains, put down a new rug, and paint! All done with real tracks and of course, me singing. I always liked this track. I wrote it during a period in my writing where I was experimenting with song form. This is a simple track, but intreging nonetheless. Only vocal kicks it off. Chorus up front. Effective lyrics and message. And wonderful instrumentation now, from real tracks. I had an acoustic bass on the original, and I'm happy to have it in this version from RT's too. It makes the vibe. Hope you all enjoy! It's traditional country, so if that's not your thing- you may not! LOL!

Hey Dan,
Great job in every respect!
I love your vocal - it's like you were channeling Bill Anderson and George Jones.
Also cool change up.
Traditional fans should love this!
Dan,
Very nice! Agree with Josie on the vocal - great fit with this song.
Bob
Dan,
Loved it. Great classic country! Nice vocal and mix as well.
I thought the (down) modulation was a nice touch... Only thing it's missin' is a twangy Telecaster.
Nice work,
Greg
Thanks all. I tried like heck to include a RT tele. It just got a bit busy with it. This was a fun one for sure. Thanks a bunch for the spins!
Dan
Hey Dan!! Really liked this one. Singing and harmony was right on. Mix was perfect. You need to do some more like this one. occ
Hi Dan, really good job on this one! Great traditional country sound. Reminds me of when I was growing up, and the music my dad used to listen to! Keep up the good work!
Steve
Very nice - your phrasing is a real joy to listen to. It's a gutsy thing to start a song off with a solo vocal like that, but you've got the chops to pull it off.
I also liked the arrangement - good job showing off the instruments, but keeping them in back of the vocals.
Color me impressed.
Thanks again guys! David, thanks for your thoughts. Although, I'm not a vocal superman either so I needed to do something simple to help. Up front on the pickup, I included the strum acoustic guitar for the vocal recording session so I could hear timing but more importantly- pitch. Once completed, the strum guitar was removed, leaving the vocal pickup in perfect time and in pitch. It's a good idea to keep these kind of needs in mind originally, when creating the biab chart. Makes things easier as you go along.

Hi Dan this was wonderful beautiful vocal and harmonies, catchy tune and a mix i would die for ,love the way you build the song up as it progresses,i hope you don't mind me asking, but did you use any re-verb or effect on your voice as it sure was sweet ,even thou you are a brilliant singer ,very best wishes Brian.
Thanks Brian. I do use reverb on my vocal. Each song is different and I use it accordingly. I usually apply it so it's not too heavy. It's there helping, but not so bathed that it's obvious. Although, some songs require that too. It depends. I also use a good dose of compression and limiting, as well as volume automation, which keeps the vocal consistant in volume and keeps it right in the sweet spot in the mix. Also, the second half of this tune is an example of a modulation I was talking about with your song- a key change upwards. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi Dan,
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey through "Heart Of Gold". It's a very skillful production of an extremely well written and extremely well sung song. First call all the way.
All the best,
Noel

It’s all been said. Classic country done right!
Two thumbs up.
Hey Dan...
You're usual excellent job. Josie got it dead on...REALLY sounds like Bill Anderson. Man you nailed it. You know how I love that old country stuff. You really captured the feel here. Too cool
Howz things?
Later,
Bob
Bob I gotta say- I was freaked out at first. I saw you had a post and I was looking forward and expecting a new song from you. Then I see Heart of Gold and I'm like WHAT??? That's MY last song title! LOLOLOLOL! Then I realize you're responding to my song! LOL! All this within a split second. Too funny. Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. All is well here- chuggin along. Hope all is well for you too!
Dan
Hi Dan,
Sorry to be late to the show (there's always one)
I would like to say I just love country songs and this song of yours is way up there.
Where do you get the idea for a song from?
Is it just jamming or do you have a different path?
Best regards
George

Well no, it's not Dan which is why you may be interested in my comments!
I like the way this is put together.
The fiddle and pedal steel add just enough interest without being cloying or obtrusive.
Nice clear tuneful vox which convey plenty of emotion
I always find its slightly difficult to identify with a song with another very well known song as its title
worth waiting for, Dan!
Thanks guys. George, I write my songs fully in my head before digging in and working on them. I'm a 30 year professional guitarist and yet, I never have an instrument around when I write. I'm pretty strategic about the whole process. Jams do not launch songs for me, although I guess it could. It's just never happened.
Marc- thanks for your kind words. Early on I realized Neal Young had the title covered, which is why I call mine 'A' heart of gold! LOL! But I seemed to have dropped the A myself too! Better watch that! LOL!
Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment George and Marc!
Dan
Great song and production Dan. You have a great voice, this is my kind of country May I ask what did you use for the harmonies?
musiclover
Thank you for your kind words. For my harmonies, I sang the parts- no harmonizer used. Thanks for listening and commenting!
Dan
Great song and fantastic vocal. You have a great voice.
Heart of Gold is easily worth $5,000 an ounce!
Thanks for sharing. Well done recording. I really enjoyed it.
