This is a reposting of a track I submitted a while ago. I recently upgraded from Mega to UltraPackPlus (guys, don’t bother with Mega, get the whole lot- it’s cheaper in the long run). I originally got the idea from playing the chords for Hotel California backwards, and jazzing them up.
Bearing in mind the helpful comments I was given, I made some changes. Because the melody and solo are all (my own) guitar playing, I split the solo and used the KT Granulater on the verse sections and a Line6 Elements Tube Drive on the Middle 8 to add interest. In most of the rest, I used the Smooth Jazz backing at 85bpm. I added some rests, holds and pushes for spice. In 2 of the Middle 8’s I changed the style to Reggae, and in the last one I used stops. I put the individual tracks into Sonar and added the Camel Crusher free plug-in to beef up the drums and bass a bit. I also put a line6 elements Slap Plate reverb on the drums. You don’t really notice it until you A/B- it adds life. I also used the Smooth Jazz ev 16 in the solo- it wouldn’t have worked with the melody. I used Sonar’s Vintage Channel to add warmth and punch to the Electric Piano. I put the whole mix through Kajerhaus’ wonderful Master Limiter (Can you tell how cheap I am- using all these free plug-ins ;-)?
The guitar was recorded using my Line6 Tone Port with Pod Farm 2 using my own patch. The guitar is a Fender Am Stan Strat with Kinman Traditional Mk II pickups and a Callaham Bridge Block and Saddles. (not a sound one would associate with Fender )! I was going for a sort of hybrid George Benson/ Larry Carlton type sound (please don’t flame me, I’m not trying in any way to compare myself to those great players). The improvised solo was the 3rd take (no comping).I welcome comments. I work alone, so objectivity sometimes falls a bit short. However, I hope you enjoy it.
